Since I have a 64' with VIN # 200021 which is Right Hand Drive ( UK
registered) and all the LHD Amphis start with VIN # 1xxxxxx, then did the
factory sequence the RHD amphis 1-98 eg. 200001-200098, or did they sequence
the serial numbers based upon actual production eg. LHD VIN for a 64' would
be 100020 and mine being RHD for the next 64' was 200021 ?

Help from those who know such things please,

Hi Paul,

The right hand cars were stamped from 200001 through to 200098 most are here
but at least 2 are in the US. They had significant differences from the left
hand drive cars such that they could not easily have just been converted and
were not built at the same time - may not even have been in the same
factory, remember there were 2 factories ! There is some info about this in
Rene Pohl's excellent book - but you need to read German !

One other point, the VIN (or chassis/frame number) was often written on the
inside of the convertible top cover, this had 2 small leather circles on it
to protect it from the hood frame and the number is written by hand on one
of them, reason is the press stud spacing on the top of the rear seat
changed a number of times during production and the number on the cover ties
it to the car and therefore the seat.

How sad is it knowing this stuff !! Must get back to work.....
