Marty,
I think I'd replace the seal on the shaft between the land and water tranny.
Oil leaking through this seal will allow oil to move from the water trans to
the land trans...and if yours hasn't been replaced for close to 40 years,
I'd be tempted to put it in while you're there.

I'll take a look at it. It must still have the original seal and I
bet it needs a fresh one. Thanks for the input.

I know an Amphicar owner that just installed his newly restored tranny. When
he selects gears 1 through 4, the car goes in reverse. If he wants to go
forward, he puts it in reverse. What is wrong?

Rob, are you sure you didn't post this about 3 days too late? Could the driver's
set have been rebuilt and installed backwards?

But seriously, I can't imagine how this could happen in rebuilding the trans.
Are you serious; all 4 forward gears now yield 4 speeds in reverse? The only way
I could see that would be if the 1147cc engine was turning in reverse rotation,
and that's about as impossible a scenario as anyone can imagine.

Wait a minute, is this some kind of trailer joke?

Bob,
It's no joke. The ring gear on the ring and pinion will go on either
side. Your guy put the ring gear on the wrong side. No big deal except
for the labor.

Does anyone know the eBay auction number for the tranny with the free car?
What did the winner pay?

Because of the fact that the land tranny has a spot that is lower
than the accessible drain plug, I have found that one way to get all the oil
out of the tranny is to park the car on a severe slope with the front of the
car pointed downhill. Any thoughts on this?.

I have just purchased a late-style tranny (my 4th "for sale") and shipped it
to my tranny expert for refurbishing. 10 years ago the previous owner
decided to buy an NOS tranny because he thought his tranny was a bit noisy.
But after restoring his car, he discovered that the NOS tranny sounded just
like his original tranny. He kept his original instead of turning it in. I
should have this tranny priced shortly once we have inspected it, determined
if it needs repairs, and made it "swim & drive ready".

I am restoring a '64 white that I will paint red
