Tranny Install ???

Hello All,

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone.
Hope Santa was good to you and your Amphis.

Having a house full of bodies I decided to enlist some
help in putting in my new tranny (took the old one out
months ago).

Anyway, engine is still in the car and was blocked
underneath before removing old trans. WIth two
people, I can get the new tranny lined up on the bolts
to the bell housing but can not get it to move onto
the shaft. Given that the shaft is splined I do not
want to force it as I am assuming (perhaps
incorrectly) that this is the hang up.

Any suggestions or hints appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike Israel

Mike, I might be wrong, but don't you have to ensure that the driven plate in the clutch (which has the female spline that slips over the extended transmission input shaft when you mate them) is centered to the clutch cover assembly?

Actually, the right description would be that you want the transmission shaft to be concentric with the driven plate, the clutch assembly cover, the flywheel and the engine crankshaft. Everything, except the driven plate, is aligned by locating pins and bolts, and is beyond your control. But I think the driven plate can "wander" off center (either because you didn't line it up in the first place, or you had so much trouble in mating the transmission to the engine that the transmission shaft nudged the plate off center).

The spline joint is a close fit (you don't want rattle or vibration), but I don't think the transmission shaft or the driven plate splined hole have much of a tapered "lead-in" to compensate for initial mis-alignment, so the joint needs to be pretty well aligned to mate.

Before you give up and pull the transmission out, did you try putting the water transmission into engagement and then rocking one of the propeller output drive shaft faces? Remember, applying torque to the propeller shaft gear will apply triple the torque to the transmission shaft, and 1/3 of the rotational motion. If you are just a little mis-aligned, maybe a bit of shaft rocking might allow the spline joint to mate.

Hope this helps!

The normal problems are:

1. The spilines are not lining up.
Put the water tranny in gear. As you push the tranny forward, you can turn one of the prop shaft drive mounts which will turn the main drive shaft. At some point the splines will line up.

2. The clutch is no longer lined up (centered) with the bushing in the flywheel.
If the splines are engaging but the tranny is still about a half inch from being all the way on, your not getting into the bushing in the flywheel. I hope you have a clutch alignment tool. If not, you can use a screwdriver and try to center the clutch around the bushing.

Good luck,

Dear Mike, Hello, I had a 4hour project to get the trans together. It requires
perfect alignment because of the small fine splines. Check for burrs and have
someone turning the engine while gently wiggeling the trans. keep the space
equal between the engine and trans at all times and it will eventually go
together. Good luck, Mark Amsdill 62 white From Michigan
