I want to build an Amphi only trailer. I have a frame with four wheel
brakes. Just needs some steel for the deck. I went to a steel store
called Bobby's. The place was dimly lit with a smell of oil. As I looked
in a hand written note book of steel in stock, I realized I had no idea
of what I wanted. I knew I needed to see the stuff. Bobby was there, an
old skinny guy. I told him I was looking for steel for a light weight
trailer I wanted to build. He talked to me in two pack a day for fifty
years voice. He told me he didn't know because he doesn't build
trailers. When I asked some questions on weight I thought for sure he
was going to answer with "You dumb shit" some were in his reply. Finally
I asked to see a sheet of 14 gauge. He was talking, and I felt like I
was in Alabama. I just kind of grunted when he did. I am not sure what
he was saying. But we did make it to the building with lots of different
sheets of steel. Some other guy followed us in and just stared waiting
for an order. I told Bobby I was just looking and I know the guy that
just stared was thinking the south should of won. I did find what I

I have such a trailer in back yard and have given much thought to
it.The problem is wieght and drag.Although they are built of light materials
(the frame is almost paper thin,walls 2x2.)the size you would need would be
large and heavy
meaning you would need a large truck to pull it and gas millage would be
zip.
On my recent trip from Canada to Florida I used a 2 wheel flat bed trailer
and built a tear drop shap on the front out of shink wrap.this ended ont the
roof and
to a piont at the rear on the sides.
It dindn,t work!!!!!
the exra frontal area was felt(drag)
the wind played havock on the joints of plastic, and it started ripping and
flapping.
By the time i got down there l had cut most of it off.
Ive even trided shink wrapping just the car but again small flaping does
occur and damage to the paint(had to buff it out)
I think the best way to hall long distance is open trailer
with motor home wiskers for mudflaps under your truck.
gas millage on 2000 f150 went from 650 klms to 425klm a tank.

Just a thought.
Has anyone looked into the possibility of getting an old 14'-16'
camper-trailer, gutting out the inside, and cutting the back off to
make a door?
A friend of mine came up with this idea, but I don't know if it's
feasable. Someday when I have time, I'll check out some camper places and
see if it could be done.

I will have to get a picture of my custom Alu, Amphicar trailer
to the club page.On trip to Florida I was Going over 75mph most of the way
and did not even know the car was behind me.
No one should ever lift a trailer by hand.A tilt crank with wheel on it is
the answer
As Arnold said I am a lover of some weigth as I have seen the result of not
enought a few times in my boat haul bisines.(WRECKS),, not mine.
If you can lift the hitch by hand with a amphicar on it you do not have the
proper loading.
Also just played with my carb this moring for sticking throttle. Have not
traced it down yet,but is good in the shop,

I am still a believer in dual axle and they can be made small and
ight.( mine is all aluminum)
As the people whom have seen mine can verify.
I even have it enclosed now,
And no one else can borrow it unless they own a amphi cause it won,t fit.

Danno is correct on the pole light leather straps that screw to the back of
the rear seat upper frame. They appear to be no where near the original but
still work.

Robert, I believe the trailers you refer to do have single axles but still
have 2 tires per side, still giving safety in the event of a bearing seizure or
a tire failure of the blow out variety. Your trailers are fabulous in every
way- weight, functionality, storage, etc. But most people still have the concern
as to what may happen if a tire shreds
and most of it comes off the wheel. How much control would you really have?
Like
others, I still feel 4 small tires may be safer than 2 large ones. To add
more fuel to the fire... does anyone know how much a small boat of say 12 ft
weighs that use the single axle type boat trailer? This may give us a better
idea
regarding a single axle trailer. So , if a small cruiser weighs about 12 to
1500 pounds, a single axle trailer
for an Amphi just may be the way to go.
Just my 2 cents worth. BTW, thanks to all who shared clutch, water pump and
throw out bearing data. This is the data we all need to keep our critters
going. Keep up the good work and please keep sharing your experiences. Chuck red

Trailers very from state to state. In Wisconsin any trailer over 3000 pounds
total weight trailer and cargo require two axles. I do not want to get into
2260 lbs and a trailer of 740 lbs arguement. I want two axles and a nice light
weight inexpensive not rippin my eyes trailer. So whats the problem?

I am loading my trailer for a trip to Quebec on Sat to pick up another
Amphicar.
This is a custom enclosed /or not,,,.that only fits Amphis
I will take some photos and email to you and any other members that are
interested.
When Gloria Tiller meet me in March she could not belive a Amphicar was
inside.

I decided to talk to a local trailer guy here in Milwaukee. Left my Amphi
with him and told him to build me a trailer. Two weeks later I got the call ...
trailer is done come and get it. So I get to see it Friday. Dual axles,
electric brakes, really scary, but here goes let you know tomorrow.

economically.

I have sold 14 light amphi trailer so far. I am sure that these new owners
feel that they hit a home run buying a fuel efficient trailer as gas prices
continue to climb. When gas is $5 a gallon, there will probably be a long
waiting list.

As Gord said, everything is going to go up in cost.

I still have one Econo-Hauler at the special price that I advertised in the
club newsletter. And we offer very affordable delivery. Ask Mike Israel.
We just delivered his trailer to him in Pennsylvania for less than he could
have bought the gas for, not to mention the 25 hours in driving time and the
hotel that he saved.

My philosophy on trailers: provide quality at competitive prices. If
someone can weld, they can be a trailer builder. Here today, gone tomorrow!
These are not the people that I work with. I am a firm believer in that
"you get what you pay for".

Steel and aluminum has gone up radically in the last year, so trailer prices
have moved up accordingly. If materials keep going up, trailer prices will
follow. Maybe it is smart to make the move now

On that same trip that we delivered Mike's trailer, we picked up my 1300
small journal ready to be re-built. It is at stock specs; it has never been
machined. I can deliver it to Celina. Also have an 1147 machined and ready
to build.

Just purchased another car.....that is #6 this year. Hope to buy 3 more that
I have found before the end of the year. I purchased an almost rust-free
beater that I am now restoring that will be available in time for Celina.
Any one interested, contact me off-line.

I am now marketing cars on my web site, both mine and for other people. It
should be updated tonight showing the 2nd car on the site. The 1st one is
sold. The 2nd one is owned by someone else and is better than new. I am
waiting for the clip from the owner, but the cars "for sale" will feature
lots of good photos along with a video so that a prospect can see and hear
the car going through the gears and in the water.

Yes, Rob saved me a lot of time and headache by delivering my trailer for less
than I would have spent to go get it. I am also getting too old for those mega
r
oad trips!!!

The driver who delivered it was very professional and easy to deal with. The
trailer itself is a used trailex aluminum hauler that Rob brokered. I am
extreme
ly happy with the trailer and look forward to using it to attend many swim-ins
that I could not get to in the past.
