Trademarking "AMPHICAR"

Mike,

Excellent question Mike and thanks for asking it!

The trademark is owned by any paid club member and its full use is
granted to and will remain without charge to any paid club members.
This is our gift to all the club members and to the club's future as
a whole to ensure nobody can prevent us from using it or charging
for its use.

This ensures that amphicar.com and any other use will remain in the
hands of our club members where it should be. We never considered
this for any kind of commercial gain only as another benefit of
being a member of the IAOC.

There are many instances where domain names were taken over by the
company from the private owners of those domain names. The courts
ruled in the favor of the trademark/copyright owners over the domain
name owners. This forced domain owners into giving up the use of the
domain names (websites) to the big companies.

This was a genuine possibility in our case as well. Unless the IAOC
owned the rights, there would be no way to absolutely guarantee that
Amphicar.com would always be operated by the IAOC, amphicarparts.com
would remain with Allen and allowing Hugh to continue his use of the
name as well. These are only a few examples of many scenarios. Bilgy
owns / operates the Amphicar.net site for FREE for all of the
members (if you have not, go there and check it out!). He would not
be completely safe either. How sad would that be to loose these
super resources to a faceless commercial entity?

We discussed this project quite a bit and in great depth over many
months. We made the decision to go forward with this for the good of
all club members. We only hope everyone appreciates the efforts we
made and has pride in knowing that you all now own "AMPHICAR" a
unique part of automotive history.

Please let us know how you feel, via email, phone or smoke signals
if ya like! I have had a few calls and emails, all positive so far.
We want to hear from you, good or bad!!

What webmaster John Bevins stated
is spot on. The trademarking of
"Amphicar" is an act of amphibious
self preservation for all our fine
finned friends in the IAOC. It is
yet another reason to join/re-join
the best car club on this planet.
