Dan,
I did this recently. I used a standard engine hoist that did not have
enough lift to clear the rear edge of the engine compartment. Had to
remove the rear wheels and lower the car on some plastic soda crates.
Make sure there is enough space to under the car to jack it back up later
(I used a hydraulic jack with a piece of 1x6 or 1x8 to spread the
weight.)
There were three of us putting it in. One on the hoist and two guiding
the engine and transmission. Try and set the balance point so the tranny
can be pulled downward. It's sort of a precision manuever: once you
clear the rear edge, it's gently lower, push the hoist a little closer,
lower, push, all the while dipping (or pulling) the tranny down and
under the rear seat deck. It's tight and I ended up scraping paint. At
some point, get someone inside the car the guide the tranny in place.
Good luck.
