I did it. My blue amphi is a swimmer. Have to admit, there was a bit of
hesitation going down the ramp...but son-of-a-gun...it floated. Had some
leakage under each door, and since it was evening, I didn't stay but a
few minutes [not even long enough to bilge]. What an absolute blast. The
tune-up made a world of difference. Thanks to all over the past year and
a half for the support, advice and parts. I see fun ahead.

I did go to Seneca...about 15-20 minutes from the house. I was not very
wide. Actually seemed like it was the canal and not the river.

Randy -
I know the thrill - I already owned my '67 Amphicar ( now the "Split
Personality") when I had my first ride in an Amphicar owned by Dave Monier at
the first impromptu Amphicar Swim-In at Mount Dora in 1998. I had had loads of
prophecies of doom from non-Amphicar owners and suggestions of putting a hose
in it on land and seeing where the water ran out, etc.(I came to think water
might run out faster than I could put it in with a hose) Consequently, I was a
little more than trepidacious about that first (last ?) plunge. My wife,
Carol, thought it wisest that she not accompany me on the first (last ?)
attempt.
Living then in the Fort Lauderdale area and not wanting to utilize the canals
connected to the ocean that are at least brackish if not outright salty, I was
invited by a friend to drive 10 miles west to a fresh water canal. After doing
everything I'd been told to do, in I "eased" and what do no know - other than
a mental rush as I recognized I was "water borne" and not playing
"submarine"' and noticing a minor stream of water seeping in at the front of the
the
driver's door which was subsequently remedied 100% by self stick weatherstrip,
the
Maiden Voyage was an unqualified success. It was in a canal, not the open
seas, requiring that I had to do a bit of closer maneurvering and while Carol
and my friend took pictures and videotaped the event, one of the funnier
pictures shows the brake lights coming on as I "hit the brakes" in a couple of
instances which did not afford a whole lot of stopping power in the water!
However,
the reverse gear worked fine and the day was, as yours, a great success and
the opening of a whole new world. Enjoy and share the fun.

Congratulations on your first SWIM!

It will be a moment in time you will never forget. Been 35 years for us and I
can still remember every second of joy.
