To Letter or Not to Letter

OK, should I stick my boat registration letters directly on the car?

I thought I was so smart when I put my boat numbers on that flexible magnetic
stuff. But, on my first swim with them, one of them came off and sank --
never to be seen again.

So, do I just bite-the-bullet and stick them to the fender, or does someone
have a better idea?

What about on the inside of one the windows? Is that legal?? It would still be

Roger,
Go ahead and stick them on the car. Those magnetic strips can scratch your
paint anyway. If you ever want to remove them they come off easily. Just
soften them up with a blow dryer and the will come right up.

Check with your state 1st. Most require them to be up front on either
side with specific locations. They will have the specs on exactly
where they have to be displayed. They will also have specs as to size
and sometimes colors.

I designed them on my PC and then went down to a local "Signs Plus"
store and in 20 mins and $20 later, came out with a pair. It took me
about 15 mins ea. to put them on. They won't fade, peel or fall off.
Removal is easy and without damage at all.

To install vinyl numbers;
- Get a spray bottle and put a couple of drops (No more!) of dish
soap in and fill with warm water.
- Wash the surface with a soft cloth making sure it is completely
free of dirt, oil and fibers. Even a small hair will show. Use a tack
rag if you have one
- Temporarily tape your numbers on, stand back and see if this is
where you want them.
- Measure and mark your locations evenly on both sides. Paying
attention to any local requirements pertaining to location.
- Wet the surface down with the soap mixture. (too much is not
enough) This will allow you to reposition the decal and help remove
bubbles
- Peel the protective backing (the side that mates to the car's
surface) off and wet the decal with the soapy mixture
- Place the numbers on the wet surface center 1st. Slowly tack them
down *lightly* checking alignment. You can slide them into position
if needed
- Once you are satisfied with the positioning, using a good quality
rubber squeegee. (plastic can scratch or tear them) SLOWLY and firmly
push the bubbles and water to the closest edge. Be sure all corners
are down.
- SLOWLY peel off the backing at a 45 deg angle to any edges and
close to the body to avoid lifting, inspect for bubbles/lifting.
- If you have a small bubbles that won't move to the edge, use a
sharp needle to poke a single hole in the center of the bubble,
squeegee the air out.
- Give them a day before swimming.

Re: Re: To Letter or Not to Letter

Hello, I had my letters on a magnetic sign . I just pull them out of a bag under
the front seat and stick them on . I do put a small piece of duct tape on each
corner to stop a wave from taking them off. I hope everyone is having a nice
winter. Stay warm, Mark and Karen Amsdill Dexter ,mich. 62 blue

The numbers bring a lot of positive attention. And some of the "personal
watercraft" varieties look great with the different color schemes and color
fading effects and others go a little too extreme in the "sparkles". So I
wouldn't hesitate to put the numbers on the car. Its all part of being
amphibious...

Re: Re: To Letter or Not to Letter

IMHO, the letters only add to the charm of the
Amphicar. When I have had mine at car shows, one of
the comments I frequently hear is, "look, it even has
boat registration numbers".

The better quality lettering looks pretty good as
well. As Mike indicated, they are always easily
removed with a hair dryer to heat up the vinyl.
