Tie Rod Ends

Is there a common replacement tie rod end for Amphicars? Something I
could buy at my local NAPA autoparts store? Couldn't find anything in
the archive.

David Chapman appears to have foreseen just the item for you in his Tech
Tips Page at http://www.amphicars.com/actgen.htm, wherein one reads:
"Restoration tips: I have found that the Track/Tie Rod Ends that were used
on Amphicar are exactly the same as the ones used on the Mercedes 190 and
220 of around 1964. There are 4 Left Hand Thread and 4 Right Hand Thread on
Amphicar, The best ones are made by Lemf?rder, part numbers: Original
Mercedes 022 190 017 524, Lemf?rder 000 338 5010 and Original Mercedes 022
190 023 524,Lemf?rder 000 338 5210".

Now hurry up and get that thing floating! I've already got the ribs in the
marinade...

Well, I just used the "search" feature on my Archive CD (see
ad in the last club newletter) and in just a few seconds, it
easily found several "hits", including that page from Dave
Chapman's web site cross referencing to the Mercedes parts.
So, if you hadn't considered the Archive 2002 CD (and you are
a club member), you might want to think about it again. (I
searched for "tie+rod+end" and got about 30 hits including
Gordon's catalog pages, Dave Chapman's pages, another page on
Alternator conversion ... yes, it had the word "tie" and "rod"
and "end" in it so it was a "legal" match ... and a few
others. Doing a live internet "Google.com" search on
"tie+rod+end+amphicar" also came up with Dave Chapman's web
page along with other "mis-hits" too such as the San Diego
Press Club J-Awards that also had the "right" combination for
a "legal" hit.) Anyway, I'm surprised that interest in this
CD has been so low (which is okay as I really don't want to
make a few hundred of these things one at a time ... believe
me, it was a labor of love but after doing all the work for my
own personal use, I agreed to share my research with club
members). It does contain some useful information (including
the owner's manual scans mentioned in another posting) as well
as other stuff that is off topic for sure. Remember, this CD
is not to be used for commercial purposes, but only for your
personal research and reference, and your use of any content
is at your own risk as the information has come from many
sources and as such can not be verified as any more accurate
than the original source.

(PS. Michael B and HG ... your's are in the mail today. I
was out of town for a week so it got delayed by my vacation).
