Bit more about the thermostat.

Problem without one there is too much flow goes to radiator and not enough through engine block. For racers Triumph sold a "Thermostat replacement plate". This was a blank steel pressing with a hole in the middle that has the same resistance to water as a fully open 'stat. However this is only really approprate for racing, the racers know the cars will overheat after say 15 minutes of use (because of the way they are tuned) so they prefer the longer warmup time you get with the 'stat fully open all the time.

The original Amphicar style "bellows" stat when it failed would close which would cause overheating so removing the stat was a roadside fix to get you home. Later type stats failed open which helped fix the problem.

The overheating problem will be caused by something else. Removing the 'stat is like taking Asprin because you've got a broken leg ! Don't do it, go and get the leg sorted !
