The Board and Elections

To the group: At our Holland Swim In Mike & Chris pressed me to run for the
Amphicar Board. Well, I have given it some thought. Lots of thought. This
is a great group of people and this club means a lot to me. Jim and I have
found great friends and enjoy the gatherings of the Amphi's. But

I am hesitant. Partly because of the gender thing. There are no women on
the Board. Amphi, after all, is really a man's car. And time is always a
factor for me as well as being 4 hours from Celina, which I know is one of
the big tasks for the Board every year.

Also, as I understand from the group chat, that ALL the Board members are
leaving. My concern is the transition period. How does an entire fresh
Board continue the effectiveness of the club, without any existing Board
members staying? I would feel better if a couple members were in place and
a few people came on, but to change everyone in one year is not comfortable.
Key positions like Bill, our Web Master, would be a challenge to replace.
It takes a skill way beyond normal computing to do what he does. Do we have
a member who would volunteer their time? Also, the liability issue is a
question that has not been looked at. As a Board member of an unofficial
group, with no legal papers, what are the personal legal risks for a Board
member. There is the paperwork issue of switching the bookkeeping records
from one individual to another every couple of years, too. I am sure Mark is
more than ready for a break on all the paperwork. These are issues a new
Board will have to address, maybe not right away, but soon.

I am willing to be a Board member, if the group will consider me. It's a
big responsibility. The Board will need the help from the entire membership
to continue the job of growing this group of Amphicar friends.

Our current Board members have done a great job of getting us together. It
will be hard to fill their shoes.

Sincerely, Gloria Tiller

Gloria and all,

We are not all leaving but when we established the club and worked out the rules
(the articles) some years ago we took the common convention used in clubs like
ours that after a couple of years we put ourselves up for re-election, that will
be happening in December. Last time we did that nobody else came forward so we
all stood again. The board agreed in Celina it's probably time to change and it
would be good to get new people and new ideas, hence the call for people to
stand for election. There have been no arguements or fallouts, there is no
"poison chalice !"

The articles we set up for the club we believe cover the legal issues, but
again if a club member with a legal background wants to check it out that would
be appreciated. I did a lot of that work because the car club culture is much
more established in Europe and so had access to some relevent documents.

Gloria you are the sort of person that I think would make a great board member,
as for being 4 hours from Celina ... pah ! The geography really doesn't
matter.

One important point, this Internet group is nothing to do with the Amphicar
club, yes it is how a lot of us exchange information but many (possibly most)
Amphicar club members are not in this Internet group and many people in this
group are not Amphicar club members and so of course can not vote or stand.
Whilst I think it's fine to encourage people to stand for election (and join the
Amphicar club) in this Internet group all of the nominations, details and formal
stuff will be via the club newsletter.

There is no reason for anyone to be concerned about any transition period of
the Club....we will all still be around, just an email or phone call away.
And like D.C. said, nothing was mentioned about ALL the Board members
leaving the Board, it's just that ALL the Board members are up for
re-election. I am the only one that I know for sure is not running for a
Board position. I have not specifically asked each other member of the
Board....that's up to them.
And Gloria, don't even think about the fact that you are female as a
problem....that's crazy, you would be a fine person to serve.

Everyone: There are LOTS of you who are club members and would be perfect
to serve on the Board. If you're willing to help run the club, send in your
name to me right away as directed in the latest club newsletter. Deadline
is only a few weeks away, so get your names in!

Marc Schlemmer.
