The storys make the Amphi so worth while. Ive always heard of the guy at
Starved Rock. Well now Iam restoring his nephews car. He told of the
time they strapped a full size refrigerator to the back of the Amphi to
bring to the island. I would love to see a pic of that. He said between
his uncle and himself they had six cars. Two runners and four parts
cars. His Uncle ended up with a girl friend and then an ex-wife. He said
the garage was stuffed with all of these parts from four cars. Off they
went to become mufflers and tin cans.UGGGH. He was also very concerned
about originality. Then he confessed, that he had owned a few Corvettes.
I smiled just thinking about that beating we and especially Bill
Connelly gave that one guy last year that was thinking about dumping his
Amphi for a Vette. Forever known now as a white plastic dildo. That was
some creative writing! Iam still looking for tool to extract speedometer
housing assembly. Later Dave the Wave

I am getting tired of winter and no Amphi fun.
I feel your pain. I broke and had to attend to Brown Wonder. The smell
of fuel, oil, and exhaust. When I was sixteen and my first car was a 69
Mustang fastback,302 and four speed. I would sneek into garage have a
smoke and blame the smell on the car. I started Amphi and drove into
garage. The over rich smell of fuel and oil brought back a lot of
memories. I can look back and remember yet still have no idea were all
of those years went. Hey Amphipoda for your birthday present Iam heading
out there in April. Going to Laughlin Nevada on some motorcycle event.
Ill be seeing John Bevins too. A quick stop with my leathers on at Lake
Mirmar then vroom off into the desert. Later soon to be a biker Dave the

We went to La Salle for a town wide cruise and show. The red 66 was a
real crowd pleaser. Must of heard over hundred times "Thats one of them
car boats!" and then "No way!". Another first Margie even helped clean
it. We might have another non member bring his Amphi from Iowa for next
weeks swim in. Looks like we might have a house full Friday night. At
Daves RV park with room for more. I have Erics trans torn apart along
with holes in his rear quarters. So next week will really be busy. Hey

Iam getting too excited to work. Erics car had a perfect smooth clutch.
Trans broke reverse gear attachment so trans had to be pulled. 2 out of
3 springs holding plate that release bearing touches were broken. So who
really knows why some chatter and some dont?

Iam trying to figure who is visiting and when. Goal is to see my good
aquatic California buddys at Casitas. Talking to Allan ,Government
actually closes the lake at 7:30 pm. It never crossed my mind! Some of
our best adventures happened after dusk. (swear word) Government!! All I
can do is see how Saturday unfolds.

Odds are good the Stillwater Minnesota group will get even bigger. Why
cant that Amphicar phenomonom happen here. They have 20 plus Amphis in a
20 mile radius. My hope is to get up there next year. A lot of nice
people and a great looking town/river.

Craig that was good! Fire is bad. In storage? Winter really sucks there!
Last year I was on river Christmas Eve.

Holland Michigan keeps calling my name. I do not know if it will be
possible for us to go. Having met The Tillers in Celina,I know they will
be great hosts.

Dont forget Lake Geneva September 28-29. Classic Car Rally and boat
show. Meet at noon at Papa Corrys Saturday.

Dave,
I've suspected for awhile that the chatter problem might have more to
do with the flattness of and alignment with the driven plate and less
to do with perfect spring tension balance. I'm just thinking about
the problem and the forces, though I've never had a clutch apart
myself. That is soon to change though, since I recently aquired a
chatter box and plan to tear into it myself.

I have been wanting a video person to do Celina for years. A group

proffesional style video memory of "Celina 2003 The Place To Be" . It
got me to pull out old video of "The Brown Wonder". Kids were much
smaller, hair was darker. That was one great beginning to what has grown
into a great life. I am Thankful to all the people I have met. It is

Our Prez never ceases to amaze me with that great newsletter. His
commitment to the Club shows in every issue. He will be a tough act to
follow.

23 rd car called in yesterday for May 16-18 swim in. He is trying to get
done. Nothing like a swim in to help motivate.

Amphipoda is even trying to escape that harsh Sandiego weather and play.

Hey John is that next car your getting that "hidden" one I told you
about?

Margie gave me that what the heck look yesterday. Dash is mostly weld
marks, dents and rust. But now has radio installed along with chrome
compass. She did not realize I needed to fit everything before paint.
She pointed to fender and remarked how rusty it was. I couldnt help but
laugh and point to rest of untouched car and go, rusty like this ?and
this ?and this ?and this?

I just wanted to take a quick moment to thank Tommy from Tampa and Lynne for
the great hospitality they shared with us on our recent trip to Florida. We
met Tommy and Lynne at their lake property and went for a quick swim. Sure is
a funny feeling seeing gators in the water next to an Amphicar. After our
swim we went off to the Cracker Barrel for lunch and more conversation before
we headed south to Naples. We are now back in cold Wisconsin.

Sorry to wake Mermaid a few days back, I was hoping to here an answering

I hope all is well there. I called Chateue lodge and found out almost
half of the rooms are already booked for May 15th Swim In. After hearing
about Georges 250 mile river swim, Doing the Chicago River does not seem
so scary. The views would be so cool. We should be having a new Amphi

only solution I can come up with if Boys are to hang with us for a

and I will have more room for stuff. Also I want to insulate the heck
out of it. I was thinking of coating foam sheets so they would not
absorb moisture, plus be removeable. Permanent style foam kills an Amphi
quickly. I gave "Still Alive" an idea for trans tubes and he should have
those done soon. It will make our lives easier. Thanks To Brian Crombie
my play area, I mean work area has expanded. I was complaining about
lack of space and he ended up selling me a 30 foot long green house that

The REAL "muscle Amphi" would be made by installing a Mazda rotary
engine. I think it could be made to fit without lengthening the hull.
Of course the transmission would get trashed almost instantly.

My borther in law Ted has for the last 2+ years been jokingly
saying "put a Subaru WRX engine in there!"
Well, the guy in Arizona who has www.watercar.com finally put some
specs on his car which say "power from the Subaru 2.5 Turbo WRX
motor" So there ya have it!

At any rate, the Amphi won't go faster in the water with a bigger
engine anyway. It's a displacement hull, so it's constrained by it's
size, not by HP.

As the displacement hull begins to move through the water, small
waves appear at the bow and further aft along the hull. When speed
is increased, these waves grow larger and the distance between them
increases, until the boat is riding between the two waves that it is
creating. At this point, the hull has reached its maximum hull
speed. Adding additional horsepower after this point only makes the
waves bigger, with very little or no increase in the speed of the
boat.

To get a close approximation of what the maximum hull speed of any
displacement hull boat will be, use this simple formula:

1.34 X the Square Root of the Boat's Waterline Length (This is
Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed)

Example: The Amphicar's waterline length is ~14 ft, multiply 1.34 by
the square root of 14 (3.742). 1.34 x 3.712 = 4.974. The product of
this multiplication, 4.974, represents the boat's maximum hull speed
in knots (1 Knot=1.151 MPH) or ~5.725 MPH.

Re: Re: stuff

In light of the discussion of gear ratios, a Mazda Rotary engine would be an
ideal candidate. The rotary's can generally run at higher RPM's than piston
engines.

A rotary engine from an early RX7 might be worth a look if someone really
wanted a challenge. I think these engines had around 120 hp, which MIGHT not
destroy the transmission like a newer 300 hp engine likely would. And, these
engines can run at 7000 rpm without straining too much.

OK, so now about water speed. I completely agree with John that because of
hull speed, just adding HP will result in only very small increases in the
maximum water speed.

Now about John Friese's suggestion -- you say "A flat bottomed hull will
plane quite easily" this is true, and this is the main reason an Amphi is NOT
going to plane easily. The forward section of the hull may be flat, but in the
rear, where it really counts, it is far from flat. Those propeller tunnels add
a lot of weird curves to the rear of the hull. If, as part of adding your jet
drive you added panels to cover over or remove the propeller tunnels, giving
a truly flat hull, then you could likely get the car to plane. If you made a
flat full, planing would likely be possible even with the wheels still
dragging in the water -- GIVEN ENOUGH HORSEPOWER (maybe 150 hp).

But, the question is why install a jet drive when we are already halfway
there? Since the bottom edge of the propellers are an inch or two higher than
the
flat mid section of the car, the following might achieve a planing Amphiacar:

Fabricate a round duct (pipe) for each propeller. The duct would basically
follow the existing path of the propeller tunnels. The forward opening of the
duct would be nearly horizontal, in the plain of the center flat section of
the hull. The duct would then go up around the propeller and finally be open at
the aft end. This duct would enclose the propeller, eliminating the
possibility of air being sucked into the propeller. Sound familiar? This is
roughly
what the passage of an inboard water-jet looks like -- a duct with one or more
propellers (impellers) in it.

Once the ducts are installed, then the rear section of the hull below the
propellers could be covered with a plate to make it a flat continuation of the
center part of the hull. Given a 150 hp engine and metal propellers that
wouldn't break under the load, such a setup might just get an Amphi on plain.
On
the other hand, it might not!

Finally, removing the tires and wheels from a standard Amphicar is going to
result in only a small increase in top water speed, maybe 1/2 mph. But, it
will result in a huge decrease in your ability to steer! Be careful! It's that
short length of the Amphicar's hull that limits its speed, not the drag of the
wheels. Put another way, if one took a small boat that was of the same
length and weight of an Amphicar, it would probably only require 2 to 5 hp to
push
it to hull speed. Thus, the Amphicar already has an extra 35 to 40 hp to push
the tires, etc., through the water -- way more than enough.

I'll offer a deal. If anyone wants to provide an Amphicar and parts, I'll
donate my time to build them an Amphicar that I guarantee will plane (and still
drive). But it probably won't have a rear seat. :) :)

John,
A nice dissertation but I think we were talking about land speed.

Actually, I think an Amphicar could be made to plane if some sort of
jet drive could be added. A flat bottomed hull will plane quite
easily, although the wheels hanging down would certainly slop up the
water flow. One big problem is that the props lose their water as
the hull moves faster. Since there's no room for a jet drive, it's
all academic.

Thanks John! It's a lot of fun to picture an Amphi up on plane with a
huge rooster tail behind it. I have toyed with the idea of removing
the wheels while on the water to see how fast she is w/o them. I
don't have GPS to check. Maybe one day.

On land, more power for pulling those hills would be nice. I am half-
heartedly looking for a reasonable 1300 for mine. I have the dual
webbers and am seriously looking for the correct exhaust manifold. I
think it is from a 62-64 Triumph Mark I. The years may be broader
that that.
