Steering Box Brace - A Critical repair!!

Hi All,

Rob Vonracek and I have been exchanging e-mails
regarding the subject of steering box braces. we both
felt it worth sharing our opinion that this should be
considered a critical safety enhancement. Perhaps to
the point where you should not be using your Amphi
without doing so.

When the subject came up at Celina, some people seemed
to think reinforcing the box was a nicety but not a
necessity. Many people probably do not realize that,
according to Ren? Pohl, most of the European Amphicars
were actually recalled in the late 60's to fix this.
Consider the implications of losing your steering at
60 mph.

A machinist friend of Rob's had made up a very elegant
but effective brace which he uses on his Amphi and I
plan to put on mine. There are other fixes but they
honestly look like hacks. Rob's bracket is a single
piece and it looks factory. Anyway, because they are
being ordered one at a time the cost is a bit high
(approx $75). If there is enough interest, Rob
believes we may be able to procure a volume discount.
If you are interested, raise your hand.

Here is some information which Ren? Pohl sent to Rob
back in April when Rob first enquired if this was
really necessary.

Hi Robert,
the need of the brace is simply understandable if you
watch the steeringbox while somebody else is turning
the wheel from the inside. Try that!

It happened quite a few times that the box case broke
by the little movements and the driver lost complete
steering by the loose case. It might not happen
to you but in the late 60s all Amphicars were called
back to fix this problem.

At least here in Germany you will find hardly anymore
Amphicars without this additional bracket.
Such accident happened to a friend of mine with one of
the remaining few about twenty years ago and ever
since he is not placing his boots in a foreign
Amphicar before having examined the brace.

I'd be interested in a couple of them, assuming they are not just too
horrible to install.

Hi Mike,

This guy was your first ride at Celina and I didn't even know you were who
you are at that time. Nice meeting you thou. As to the braces for the
steering boxes, I would like to purchase at least two of them. Fill me in on
prices and ship dates if known.

Bill Norris wnorris@mchsi.com Thanks
