Timimg was right since I was playing with shocks anyways. I recieved a
pair from the surplus supply. I am looking forward to trying them. An
exciting week- Friday a California Amphicar shows up. A one owner
history that gets to continue with a Family tradition. The new owner
loved this car when she was a teen ager. Her Grandfather promised that
it would go to her. She is already helping me with My dream of a Chicago
River Swim. A California owner just about done with his car is planning
on shipping it out east. So he can do the 5th annual swim, Chicago and
Celina. He knows how to plan a vacation! Louisiana just may have a new
Amphi owner too. I am trying to find other Amphibious vehicles for 5th
Swim In. The German Club has so many cool amphibians all playing
together. Later Dave the Wave

Dave:

I had owned a used 65 Amphi, back in 1968, in Chicago. I had always wanted to
circumnavigate the Chicago islands, but never quite got around to it. You ask
where are the Chicago islands? Actually, there's three Chicago islands.

The first island is just a short way up the North Branch of the Chicago River
from the Loop, and isn't much of a challenge. Only about a two-mile trip.

The second island is big, being bounded by the North Branch of the Chicago
River, then the drainage canal that runs way north to Waukegan, meeting Lake
Michigan around the Bahaii Temple, and finally, Lake Michigan itself.
Unfortunately, this route is impossible, since there is a fixed dam near the
northern end, and the canal section is probably too silted up for an Amphi. But
it might be interesting to try as much of it as possible.

The third island is huge, being bounded by Lake Michigan, the Calumet River, the
Sanitary Canal west to Lemont and the South Branch of the Chicago River. This is
about a 100-mile trip, with many very long stretches of no ramp access. There
are two major locks to transit, tow boats to dodge, and the open waters of Lake
Michigan can get pretty choppy. Now that would be an awesome 24-hour event,
especially with a formation of Amphis!

As my Amphi was a native of Chicago and presumably spent time on the
river, I have always wanted to do the river. What does it take for
this to happen? Any special permits or ? How long to do it?

The Rock river was a blast as as long as everything falls into place,
I'll be there again. There is just "something" about Amphi-people!
(especially Dave!) ;^)
