Shipping Tranny

Im collecting parts and getting ready to pull motor this fall to replace wear items. One thing I want to do is ship my transmission from Boston to Florida for a refresh. Hopefully shipping and rebuilding time won't take to long.

So my questions are.

1. Where do I get Info on building a shipping crate?
2, How much does land/water tranny and crate weigh?
3. What shipper should I use and what do you think it would cost?

Brian, Get yourself an old pallet. Wrap the tranny up tightly in a bundle with an old piece of carpet to protect it. Lay it on the pallet. Cut the pallet down to the size of your tranny bundle. Get some 2x4s and plywood and make a box around the pallet/ tranny, force in more carpet to keep it from floating around and screw it all together. Try to make it easy to open by having the top removable with just a few screws. Bring it to a local freight terminal, ( I used Yellow trucking N. Reading,Ma). They will weigh it and you pay them. I think I paid $400 10 years ago. I shipped 3 to Dave in Illinois, 2009,10,12. Good luck! Jack

Thanks for the info. Sounds easy and I'm a cabinetmaker. Im going to wrap tranny in a plastic bag after letting it drain for a few days too. Im told shippers will fine you for oil spills. Going to try UPS for shipping.
