Shifting problems in WI

We have had problems getting the shifter into reverse for the past
few days. It will go in 1 out of 10 tries, sometimes.
Last night after a few swims and dinner out, we met a couple and
introduced them to the wonderful world we all enjoy. Were they ever
glad that their timing of coming out of the Anchor Inn was such that
we were just pulling in. Anyway, after we said our good buys to them
and told them what web sites to look in on, we drove down the highway
for a beverage before heading home. After we finished our beverage
and got into Amphi, started her up, she went right into reverse; but
now 1st was not there, it just made a passive grinding noise. I put
it in 2nd and off we started. 3rd was not there either, it also made
the passive grinding noise, so into 4th for the complete ride home.
We have not tried it this yet this morning; but wanted to ask if this
reminds anyone of any problems that they may have encountered B4 we
take a closer look?

Haveing had more than my fair share of odd shifting problems over the
years I can sympathise. The first 3 years I lost track of how many
hours various mechanics and Dave the Wave spent on the phone with
Hugh. Nothing suggested worked. In my case, the transmission had
been rebuilt by a "shade tree" mechanic who left out some fairly
vital parts.

Dave seems to know a lot about these now that he's had mine apart so
many times. Give him a call.

I'm really glad that he's close by because as I read the various post
I continue to believe that without him I'd have sold it long ago. It
runs like a champ now with no transmission troubles since that last
fix.

Hi guys,

Wanted to say thanks again for all fun in Celina. You are both great Amphicar
hosts. My wife was thrilled with the whole weekend and especially the time we
spent with you both. I'm told we will not attend Celina again without our car.
As for your shifting problems. Best short term fix is to tighten the clutch
cable as tight as you can, without letting the throwout bearing ride on the
clutch. As long as there is at least a little movement of the throwout bearing
arm, you should be ok. The real problem, is the synchros. If they are worn
smooth, the tranny will not stop spinning when you shift from one gear to the
next. That's what that low grinding sound is.

Thanks again for all fun. Your back seat bums,

Scott and Suncha

Hello,I had a similar shift problem . I could not shift into 1st or 3rd but
it was ok in rev. 2nd and 4th. After doing alot of work, including a new
trans. I looked at the location of the shifter at the front crossmemberand
found the problem. The car had never shifted properly and I blamed the trans.
I discovered that the factory had put a 1/4inch shim between the front
shifter assembly and the cross member. I removed it and it shifts fine. It is
very position sensitive and moving it back 1/4 made the difference. I hope
this may help you , if youhave any questions please ask. Mark Amsdill Mich.
62 blue PS. We couldnot do Celina this year ,class reunion, but will try
next year. Good Luck
