seat belts

Ed,

Check with Hugh. I was able to buy the front seat belt frame support
from him. You remove the floor, and can then weld this bracket into
the car. It has cutouts for the two main frame rails that it is
welded to. Then punch 4 small holes through the floor over the holes
in the bracket location and you are set for the fronts.

I wanted my webbing to match the interior color, so I bought webbing
from a belt manufacturer and had a boot repair guy sew them into some
old Mopar seat belt ends I had. I think you can also buy completed
belt kits from SnakeOyl Products.

For the rear, I modified David Chapman's idea of a hinged lower seat
base board for a storage area and the webbing slips through this board
to attach to the frame behind. If you want me to email you photos of
this setup, let me know at paul@amazingone.com

My wife thinks that our Amphi might not be the safest car. On the other
hand, I know that with my skill as a driver, the car is absolutely a death
trap. :) :) Anyway, my wife is insisting that I add seat belts (as well as
improve the brakes).

Can someone please describe what the stock seat belts in the later cars
looked like. I assume the latch release was a lever type, not a push-button,
is this correct? I hope to add seat belts that at least look somewhat
appropriate for the car.

Thanks.

There WERE no stock seatbelts. Suggest you check out J.C. Whitney'
offerings at http://www.jcwhitney.com/ for front seat belts and then look
over Dave Chapman's site at http://www.amphicars.com/actbelts.htm for info
on the trickier rear setup...

Bilgey I disagree about stock seat belts. Later cars all had the extra
bar with eye lets for belts. The belts I have seen, in quite a few cars
is a woven material, metal latch, connected to car by a flat metal hook
system. The Jc Whitney belts with chrome latch look period correct. The
red is great match for red interior. Order shortest length.
Now at 21 cars for Swim In. Later Dave the Still Frozen Wave

You could be right, Dave, or perhaps the dealerships added belts as an
option? Mine happens to be one of those later models with the eyelets on
the floor behind the front seat. There were no belts in mine when I got it,
so I fitted a pair of maroon lapbelts scavenged from a '79 Dodge van. I
think they look just fine.

I have installed front seat belts using the stock seat belt I-hooks and
modified the car so that rear belts could be installed. I have completed
this on all 3 cars that I have owned. The belts in matching colors are
available from an excellent company called Ssnake-oyl. They specialize in
seat belts. I can't even imagine giving a ride to someone and having an
accident with no seat belts. "It is 2003, but Amphicars didn't come stock
with seatbelts. My passengers really don't need them anyway." All I can say
is that an Amphicar owner not offering seat belts to his passenger had
better have a multi-million dollar liability umbrella on his auto insurance
policy; he may need it!

A company called Andover Restraints makes all kinds of seat belts
including the lift type release belts with hook catches that were on
the original Amphicars (with belts). They have a web site and their
prices are quite reasonable. Their site is:
http://www.andoauto.com/seat_belts.htm
