I am looking at sandblasting an repainting my car. Does anyone have recommendations on what blasting media to use?

It looks like walnut shells, plastic media, or soda blasting is the way to go. Ideas?

Depends on what is lurking beneath the paint. Soda blasting will not remove rust. It is generally used for paint removal on otherwise clean metal. Sand is too harsh, could leave pitting or cause warping. Media blasting is generally the way to go. Check the archives, lots of dicussions on the merits of blasting versus chemical dip, etc.

I remember using sand when I began to redo my Amphicar. I sandblasted all of the rust off the doors & hood with sand. The car then went to the bee-blaster & I never understood what that was. Good luck. Ina

This is my second try. half way threw I lost everything.. took a break, cursed!
Anyway.. All above will remove paint but not rust.
In the past I have sandblasted the bottom of the car leaving all sheet metal in paint and sand of with air sander, but original paint is hard as rock and wears alot of paper out.
Lately I have been using glass bead.Last year I put a car in a rotiseri outside and glass blasted the whole car.No warpage and sand removal from inside was easy..dump.This all works good if car was in good shape to start with but if you are doing a rusty car the way to go now becomes Acid dipping.(I know this has been bropught up before)
There are pros and cons to both ways..
Amphicars have 18gauge sheet metal.. Todays cars have 22G. much thinner!
If you blast a car you cnot get the rust out of the hidden corners or inner frame.
If you dip it you can but now you have to get the dip out of ALL hidden areas!
Number one I drill threw holes in all boxed frames and everyone(Everyone) should drill inspection holes in the 3 inch main frame!!!!
I hole saw a hole big enough to get a shop vac in and suck out unwated water etc. I cut this hole just infront of the Trans. under rear seat. Every car I have done(15) has been full of rust, mud ,water, black s#$%! thats been in there for 30 years or more.. not good. this should be checked and cleaned out once a year.
nuber two. door skins are always rusty the last half inch all aroud the sides and bottom. this is very hard to get out and cannot be done by blasting. even dip is not 100 %. inspect this area very carefully.
I had a car painted and was ready to put together last year when I noticed a bublle. ended up reskining it.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

My car is in pretty decent shape (with the exception of the quarter panel dropoffs - welcome to the club, right?) at least on the surface, so getting rust off is not my primary concern. Mostly I want to get rid of the paint to make sure there is not any unpleasantness lurking below the surface.

It seems like soda blasting is the way to go. Now I just need to look into renting a soda blaster.

call me - I just had this done in Ohio.

I just had mine blasted as well in Los Angeles. The
company I contracted with used finely crushed
semi-precious garnet. The original Emron paint is
difficult to get off with blasting, though.

Mike, It's good to hear from you. The blasting was not soda as I thought it would be, but media (small round beads of glass). It came out nice with little or no warping. sand is coarse and heats the metal, and the soda is for removing paint not rust, as the guy explained to me. It cost $675 for the body, compared to $1500 for the dip. I had the doors and tank dipped at $100 per piece. I have a friend that has a 1941 single cockpit Chris-craft and he is interested in getting it restored. He has the mahogany skin off and the engine out, but he doesn't have the time to do it. Do you have any sources for restoration of this boat? I thought you said you collected them?

Ed, My 63 turned out nicer than expected. How did yours turn out? My car sat outside with the plug in for a period of time, so it needs all the bottom panels replaced along with the usual areas.
