Doug,

There are two strange electrical connections that I've found on
Amphicars that cause the blowing of fuses. Once in particular is in
the wiring inside the flag pole. If you have taken the pole apart and
then reconnected the wires to the lamp base, you'll have two wires and
two terminals on the lamp socket for them to go on. The trouble is
the wires can be connected to either terminal but only one way is
correct. If you connect them the other way it will directly short the
lamp circuit and blow a fuse. Even though the two contacts on the
lamp socket appear the same, one is connected to the outside metal and
the other isn't. Be sure that the wire coming from the center pin on
the post connector is connected to the terminal that does NOT connect
to the outside metal. In normal cars, there would only be one wire
coming from that lower connector and one terminal on the lamp, with
the electrical return path going through the lamp post housing. I
have no idea why Amphicars have such a weird wiring system that can be
so easily mis-wired and cause such a problem.

Another problem area that can blow a different fuse but for the same
reason is at the two back up lamp assembles. Same thing, two wires
and two terminals only one terminal is connected to the outside of the
lamp base and will blow a fuse if those two wires aren't connected to
the correct terminals. This one can be even more annoying though
since the lamp base often makes a rather poor contact with the body of
the car and when the wires are connected backwards it will only
SOMETIMES blow a fuse in the car. Be sure that the wire that measures
zero (or very low) resistance to the body is connected to the back up
lamp terminal that measures zero resistance to it's outside metal
part. Check this at both back up lamp assemblies because a reversed
wire on either side will cause the same fuse to blow.
