Hi:

I bought a 67 Amphicar which I am about two months away from gettign
it ready to register. I am in California. Does anyone know what I
must I do to register it as a boat? I have not looked into it yet. I
plan on using it in Nevada as well any idea if I must license it as a
boat there as well?

Hi Michael,
I just went through the drill a few months ago. First, don't drive it
in to DVM unless it has a current registration on it from somewhere.
Go there first and get a temporary registration to drive it. (I
actually hid the car a couple blocks away) Then drive it in and, if
possible, find someone working there who is amused by the vehicle.
First register it as a car and then as a boat. Yes, double the fun,
and charges. It helps if you have a bill of sale saying you bought it
for some low amount and you restored it. Unfortunatly they will
charge you from the time of purchase, not the time of registration,
but that bill of sale helps since Amphicars are not in their blue
books.
Another thing, when you go swimming in the parks, they will sometimes
try to charge you both as a boat and as a car. If you like swimming
there, consider buying just an annual car pass and see if they throw
you out. Most of the water patrol people like the Amphi's and won't
bother you.

Amphipoda, this request has your name written all over
it!!!

My response would be:

1. Allow one whole free day
2. go to DMV
3. brings photos of vehicle both in and out of the
water
4.bring aspirin to DMV
5. bring Amphi to DMV
6. leave potential weapons at home to avoid possible
long jail sentence when DMV personnel drive you nuts!

Re: Re: Registration as boat

Having done this in April, allow me to add a bit more:

1. Make an appointment at the CA DMV office; use their web site to set it up.
2. When you get to the DMV office, go to their START desk right away (don't
stand in any START Desk line), tell them about the appointment, and be SURE they
give you a ticket that starts with the letter "A" (for having an appointment,
duh, but mistakes happen). Your wait time should be 15 minutes or so. Without an
appointment, or if they accidentally give you a B through who knows ticket, the
wait will be two hours or so.
3. Be ready to pay in cash or personal check; they don't take bank plastic.
4. CA has a provision for an amphibious vehicle class; they may need to look it
up, but it's there in the code. OTOH, the body style is a "convertible" (little
did they know). The DMV will issue you both the land and water documents (at
least you don't need to deal with two different bureaucracies).
5. CA has more darn little costs than closing a mortgage; grin & pay. IIRC, my
fees were around $400 total.

When I bought my Amphi last year, it had current plates from another state. I
went in, asked for the manager, explained what I was registering, and was out
in 25 minutes. The manager was able to look up how to register it as a car
and boat, inspect the cars VIN number since it was from out state, and do
both the car and boat registration unbelievably fast. I did have to promise a
ride if she every saw me at Folsom Lake by our house. I think the trick was
getting the manager involved. Everyone else at the DMV are idiots. This is
usually what I do if the car is anything but "normal."

Thanks Ed.

So I gather the DMV is where I would go to do it. Hopefully, I will it done

Re: Re: Registration as boat

Wow Ed

This is really complicated but it is what I will have to do. At least I only
have to do it once. It is good to know about the special code OTOH it will
help things along as the clerk will almost certainly not know about it.

Thanks again

Thanks Brian:

I am in the same situation my car came from another state and the numbers
will have to be verified but it is good that it can all be done at the DMV. I
was thinking that it might have to be done at another agency or even the
Coast Guard.

Michael:

The Coast Guard administers a program of vessel registration called
Documentation. I used this process quite a few years ago when I owned a fairly
big boat.

The documentation process allows you to avoid needing a state registration on
your vessel, and was a popular way to avoid getting hit with a big state
personal property tax bill. There are some other advantages about documentation
(customs clearances, a more certain proof of ownership, etc). The biggest hassle
about the process is that you need to provide a traceability of vessel
ownership, right back to the shipyard, that's as airtight as proving your
genealogical lineage to the DAR.

It's also kinda cool to cruise around without that stupid alphanumerical hash
painted on your bows.
