Hi-

Come on, guys. It's been done.

Install a Corvette engine in the trunk, connect to a New Zealand jet
boat impeller, attach water skis to the front wheels, and you can run
with the best of them. Check out the FILES section under
AMPHICR, "Amphi and powerboats2.jpg" for photographic proof.

Yep it might, it appears that turbine is rated at 150hp! :) :) :)

Besides, you could do away with the radiator. And the 8 inch?? exhaust pipe
sticking out the back would look cool.

Personally, I don't like the idea of a jet drive in an amphibious car.
But it appears that is what all the "new" designs are using. My feeling is
based on (1) liking to make beach landings with my cars, and (2) owning a
330 hp jet boat (built up Ford 460) that gets very unhappy sucking the
bottom muck, sand, stones, (and weeds) etc in shallow water. ... So when
the boat goes out from a beach, I'll push it out till somewhere just below
waist deep before cranking the engine. More than once I've sucked up a
small stone that wedged into the impellor (Now that really affects the
dynamic balance .... and you think a little mud stuck on your wheel rims
throws the tires out of balance.....) or pumped enough sludge through that
I'm sure I ground down the brass seal ring.... Anybody share my concern
for an amphibious car application landing on sandy beaches? Anyway, just
thinking off the top my head, the alternatives end up being relatively
complex.... some way of raising and lowering the prop into depths to get a
better "push" (vs throwing tons of water horizontally) as opposed to being
high enough for ground clearance all the time, or a dual design with some
type of a relatively high mounted (such as ours already are) or articulated
electric or hydraulic prop for shore and slow speed combined with a
simplier jet design for deeper water. And while we are at it for beach
landings, how about a 4 wheel drive ... even something as relatively simple
as the Subaru full time 4wd ... doesn't have to be as beefy as a Wrangler
or other off road 4x4, just a little more pull for the really slippery
beaches. (I've never been stuck yet, but have had to back out of spots I
couldn't climb) And a Hi/Low transfer case would help solve the gear
ratio problem. Now it sounds like the engine is getting to be quite beefy,
so how do you keep that cool at the same time. Hummm, maybe the old slow
amphicar isn't that bad afterall.

It must be that time of year when the unlucky 7/8ths of the people quit
swiming and start speculating.
