I didn't check this out today, but sometime in the last few days, I believe
I saw that the "Broker" was offering something on ebay though I don't believe
it had anything to do with an auction. A buyer was to send 25% , as I recall,
of the total asking price via PayPal within 48 hours and then the balance to
the "seller" or "owner" (vs the broker) within 7 days. Whatever it said, it
sure was both puzzling and sounded fishy as the ****ens - especially now in
light of your in depth research Bilgey. It sounds like a flat out Scam
which would put 25% of some amount into the Scammers pocket even if the Amphicar
had already been sold months earlier according to what I believe I read on
Dave's message. Doesn't PayPal have some safeguards which prevent such a
person from getting the funds unless they have been approved by PayPal as a
seller ?

They don't prequalify anyone from what I can see. They do have a $20,000 fraud insurance which I know at least one Amphi owner has used based on the poor condition of the bought item (from advertised). I was in the same boat on my AMphi buy but waited too long to invoke the protection (30 days). Even that protection is a farse because the clock starts at time of purchase despite any delay waiting for delivery. I have a friend here that waited 4 months for delivery of an Isetta from Idaho and after several delays and excuses from the seller, inquired about protection from eBay. They told him it was too late and he should have paid for a pre-inspection (nothing to do with a possible scam in his case but it would have revealed a fraud.) In the end, he got his car predictably worse than advertised with no recourse available... after 5 months delay. Having bought 2 panheads from eBay, I almost bit into a Duo Glide fraud out of St. Augustine Florida. In this case, eBay intervened only after other potential buyers had stated their suspicions and eBay removed the auction. In other words, they do take action but only if someone has a complaint of substance and then only reluctantly. After this last experience, no more eBay for me. That was my 5th purchase in 3 years and ALL were less than advertised but the others (than the Amphi) were within buyer beware tolerance. Death to TNT Classics in Valpariso, IN and a pox on eBay Motors!

I've purchased two cars on ebay. I made a modest deposit, and then went to inspect the cars before paying the balance. Both cars where as described and the deal was completed. Over the years, I have seen some amphicars pulled from ebay. Anyone who spends that kind of money and does the whole deal over the phone or internet shouldn't be alowed a drivers liceance, or enought money to make those kinds of mistakes.
In general, I have had good experiences with ebay.
