RADIATOR OVERFLOW JUGS

I did not see this on the research site, but I have put a cheap overflow on
our 64 radiator to catch and return the excess coolant from the radiator. The
only problem is, is that it does not return unless I remove the cap and hold
the overflow jug up to return the fluids back to the radiator.

Any ideas out there on how to make this function properly? I would sure like
to know.

Thanks

You have the wrong sort of rad cap, you need to find the 7lb type used on the
early Triumph Spitfire then as long as the tube is in the bottom of the catch
jug anything pushed out will return automatically as the engine cools down.

Hello Matthew,

I've used coolant recovery bottles in my two Amphicars for a couple
of years and they work fine. Most radiator caps have both lower and
upper seals. The lower seal keeps the water in the radiator but the
upper seal must have a good enough seal to the top of the radiator
fill pipe to form a vacumn as the engine cools. It is this vacumn
that pulls the water back from the overflow bottle. Check to see that
the top surface of your radiator fill pipe is nice and smooth and
that the outer rubber sealing surface of your radiator cap is also in
good shape. That will probably fix your problem. If not, change the
cap. I use Stant 7 pound, lever vent caps and the lever vent feature
is purely optional. As you buy them, they won't fit the Amphi
radiator because the radiator wants to see a narrower piece of metal
on the underside tab part. I simply cut away about a quarter of each
tab with a cutting wheel on a Dremel tool and then it fits just
fine.
