Prop shaft torx bolts...

I was just trying to remove the prop shafts from the tranny. Anyone know what
the torx size is for these bolts. My 6mm allen fits a little loose...

Craig,
Those aren't torx bolts. I don't think torx were invented at the
time the Amphi's were built. It's some other weird type of wrench.
Hugh sells them but a really well stocked tool place will have them
for sale too. I can't remember the name but K-D makes a driver for
them. The model is K-D 2304. It's the correct insert bit for them.

Look for an 8mm "star" bit. Sears, mail order or a
"tool box" store will have them. This head was used
on early VW brakes.

Larry and John... Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can find in Fairbanks
tomorrow.

Craig:

This was discussed about 6 or 8 months ago. Here's my post about those bolts:

"The name for this driver is "Serrated". It is definitely not a Torx (which has
a smooth radial wave pattern), definitely not a 12-point hex, and it's
definitely not a Bristol spline. NAPA stocks an 8 millimeter Serrated Wrench,
part # 2304, for about $9. The wrench is 75 millimeters (2 3/4") long, with a
5/16" hex shank. This driver will fit into a standard 5/16" socket or box
wrench.

This fits the U-joint bolts perfectly, although working space is tight (so
what's new about that) due to the U-joint yokes. They asked me if this was for
the "brake plate in my old German car". Somebody must have thought this drive
system was a good idea for something."

You will have to rotate the u-joint "just right" for each bolt. The length of
this bit helps clear the u-joint lobes, but it's still a close fit.
