Posting to the list vs privately

On the old server, Mike Israel arranged the "Reply" function so that replies
to posts would not automatically go out to the whole list, but only to the
poster.

In that way we all don't need to see numerous posts from one person to
another about something that really has nothing to do with the rest of us.

Would this be a good idea to re-institute?

I believe that function is already there on the web site.
Click on the user's protected address instead of the generic
"reply" function.
