Greetings All,
Recently, I started to reassemble my freshly painted fjord green Amphicar. One
of the first things I did was install the wire harness, incorrectly. I ran it
through the wrong opening and when I got it to the engine bay, it looked short.
So then I looked at the photo that I took two years ago and saw what I did
wrong. A half hour later it was installed correctly.
If you are restoring an Amphicar for the first time, I would strongly suggest
you take lots of photos. I took over 200 photos with a digital and put a cheap
computer in my shop for viewing the discs. From now on, I won't assume that part
A goes into part B. I will look at the photo first. It has saved me a lot of
time.
Here are some other methods of restoration that I'm doing:
1. Buy a quantity of heavy paper wire tags for labeling not so recognizable
parts and large bolts.
2. Zip-Lock bags work great for small fasteners and parts. Label them with a
sharpie marker.
3. I also use recycled soup cans and glass jars for keeping parts separate.
Again, mark what's in them with a sharpie.
4. Cut a piece of 1/2" or 3/4" plywood smaller than your floorboard and about
the same shape. Use it as a temporary deck while working inside your car. It
beats trying to get comfortable in the bottom of the hull.
5. Belt buckles, zippers and blue jean rivets can damage paint. During my
restoration, I try to keep old blankets on the quarters so people aren't leaning
over to get a good look and scratching my paint.
6. If you have the room and know of someone nearby that wants to store his/her
Amphi for the winter, offer to store it for them. What better visual reference
could you ask for? I found a guy locally that allowed me to store his and it's
a win win deal.
I hope this helps some of you restorers who are just getting started. By the
way, Amphicar Ebay listings are clean. No more sniffles-like-a-rookie!
