Reviewing the radial tire discussions on eScribe,
there has been lots of conversation, but no definitive
answer as to body or spring interference with the new
185-series tire. To those of you with either
Universal, Gordon's, or Coker's version of these
2-1/4" white sidewall tires: did you require wheel
spacers? If so, what thickness, front and/or rear?
How many use these tires without spacers?

It seems to me that this footprint is better than the
165/80 series and the 175/80 is only available in the
re-vulcanized white-wall variety, as best as I have
researched.

Thanks,

Larry,

I run Dayton 185 radials on my Red car and have no problem with
rubbing the springs. I don't use any spacers either. This car is a
late 67 car. Perhaps earlier cars were a bit different. I use Coker
Classic bias ply tires on my White car and actually find that at high
speed it tracks better than the radial tires on the Red car. I'm
trying to figure out if it's some adjustment difference or is it the
tires. Right now, I can't say. Both cars do well at high speed but
the White car is dead stable and doesn't require any significant
correction at the steering wheel to run straight and true. The Red
car seems a bit less stable and requires a bit of correction to keep
on track. I thought at first it was a toe in difference but that
seems fine so I'm looking into other ideas. It's so minor though that
I only fool around with it occasionally. I'm running out of things to
check though and I'm thinking of switching the wheels between the cars
to see if it's the tires making the difference.

John-
I would be interested in what you come up with if you switch the tires from
one car to the other. I have Bias ply tires and have no wander problem at all
(and believe me, I know what such a problem is.) However, my tires are now
about 12 or 13 years old and are not WWW, but are the narrower stripe. I I have
mulled over replacing them just on general principles because of their age,
though they have never yet given me any kind of problem. They show no cracking or
weather checking. If I did replace them, I'd plan on WWW and then comes the
question of Bias or Radials. With other antique cars from e.g. the 40s and 50s,
others tell me that Radials do wonders to minimize or eliminate "wander." It
makes me wonder why I have no such problem with the Amphi and my Bias plies.
