Oil Coolers

I almost lost my car due to the oil cooler letting go. With modern
synthetics I really wonder if coolers are all that necessary? Any
thoughts? Later Dave the Wave

Hi All,

It seems that the use of Oil Coolers in our Amphicars has been the subject of
some debate recently.

On the one hand, there is the ongoing challenge of keeping Amphi within normal
operating temps. Certainly, having the oil cooler in hooked up helps keep the
temp down. On the other hand, there have been stories of these now 40 year old
coolers rupturing which leads to spraying of hot oil and resultant engine
compartment fires. For this reason, some owners have taken to bypassing the oil
cooler.

So, has anyone found an aftermarket or substitute oil cooler that can be
purchased new and has not been subjected to 40 years of potential corrosion? I
do think this would be a great repro item (hint to Hugh, Gord, Allan, etc).

Cheers,

Mike

I think the rupturing issues were with the hoses that would then
spray oil all over the hot engine. If the oil cooler develops a leak
since it is tucked into a hole under the radiator unsure how much oil
it would or could spray on the engine?

There are many different sizes of aftermarket oil coolers on the
market and brazing the amphi fitting on should not be all that
difficult. Most parts houses will let you check out what they stock
in the back which would help in locating something close.

Maybe Poda or Dave can chime in. I could be mistaken
but I think they both had ruptures of the cooler
itself.

Amphicar made some really good oil cooler and radiators.

They areprobably the best things on the car as far as quality. You can have your oil cooler hot-tanked and tested just as a radiator, also there seems to be extra ones floating around if you just ask someone. The oil gets pretty hot in the 1147 under load. I think it is better to have one than not too, just make sure you have new hoses and check periodically.

Yeap, had a pin hole in the oil
line that gave off a fine mist
of oil that covered the entire
engine compartment. VERY BAD!!!
Fire potential is HUGE. Get it
fixed asap, carry a quality fire
extinguisher at all times.

Mike, It's the moisture in the oil and lines that kills the aluminum.

If a car was properly maintained and oil was changed frequently and kept in a climate controlled environment as we keep our cars now you should not have any trouble. I would try to get the best one I could find and go with it. Everything on your car could break tomorrow but you take a chance on other things. what if your oil pump blew you have no control...Go for it live on the edge!!!

<font FACE="arial,helvetica"><font SIZE="2" PTSIZE="10" FAMILY="SANSSERIF" FACE="Arial" LANG="0">For what its worth ---------My oil cooler story,

I heard about the lines leaking, so bought new ones and while putting them in saw that the cooler fins where the air goes thru was almost completely clogged up with dirt, leaves ect.

Figuring it never did any cooling, I left it off and sent the lines back, now nothing can leak.

At the same time I put in gauges where the inop clock was and now see the oil temp at 180F on a cool day at 60mph or 220F on a hot day at 70mph, no oil cooler. Water temp is always 160F, no thermastat.

Oil pressure runs at 40psi but I doubt the cooler sees that much pressure, that is measured at engine oil galley.

Been driving the car that way for five years, changing the oil once a year with Mobil 1

Still the original engine, never been out and uses no oil

Even with pressure testing, it is like pressure testing a used, 40 year old, radiator. It could pass the test and then still blow out an hour later. I just can not imagine they were designed with a 40 Year mtbf.

Hi LAH and everybody: Have you had your engine decarbonized? I think it's supposed to be done at 6000 miles. I know mine hasn't and its just over 6300 miles or so. After its been at normal temp a while, it runs awful with no power. I temp. installed an electric fuel pump, but, that didn't help. Maybe lapping the valves and adjusting them might help? Try using a product called Sea-Foam in the gas. It works great!

GM makes a top engine cleaner (part # 1050002) which is supposed to be
good to de-carbon your engine. Too much carbon can lead to burnt valves.

I de-carboned my engine by taking on to much water. It filled the oil
pan and unknowing I ran it home at 55 MPH for 20 minutes. Temperture
gage stayed normal. The water really cleaned out all the deposits and
the engine runs better then ever however this definitely isn't a
recommended method. Thanks to Mobil 1 the engine survived.

Kinda makes that dip stick extention kit sound pretty good.

I say, run it until the wheels fall off and then put
them back on! If I worried about my car braking down,
I would be a nervous wreck. Have fun with your car,
if it has a serious problem, we have some real experts
that can fix them. My hat is off to our experts and
you know who you are.

Cigarman, I am not much of a salesman, but what ever
you need, I will help. That is if I am not free
floating in the lake waiting for Bayman to give me a
tow! Ha. I propose that we have an emergency hot line
for those who have cell phones and brake down in the
lake, for next year.

I will try the big horn, but a cell phone works well.
I have big plans to work on the car over the winter,
clutch electronic ignition etc. My goal is, not to
need the cell phone next year!
