I have finally had a chance to get back to work on the Amphicar. The rebuilt engine is now bolted in and minutes away from turning over. Does anyone have a good suggestion on oil to use for a break in period. I will not use a synthetic. Also the Fram filter with the check valve is the number TG 16? I took off the filter last year and threw it away. But I thought the number was TG 16.

Tim, it is TG16. Just to add my 2 cents on oil and
coolers, I use just one quart or sometimes 2 of
synthetic and rest standard. I was told once by a race
driver that it's the best of both worlds- not quite as
much friction reduction as all synthetic but also
prevents the leakage. I've been doing that for the 4
years since I've owned the car and have no leaks. As
for the cooler, my car didn't have one and lots of
people have cautioned me so last year I finally
ordered the adaptor and lines, hooked it all up with
my original cooler, started the car and oil sprayed
all over. I know I could repair the cooler but after
seeing it happen and hearing several stories of fires
or near fires, I decided the risk of loosing the car
to fire was greater than the reward of cooling the oil
and preventing potential premature rebuild. Anyway, I
use my car a lot and whether it is the partial
synthetic that keeps engine cool or just luck, my
engine sounds and performs great after 4 years with no
cooler.

Any quality "dino" oil will perform well for your rebuilt engine - DO NOT USE
SYNTHETIC FOR BREAK-IN!! It will not let rings and things seat properly! Gary.

Gary, I have some disturbing news. My 12 year old son
and I rented a Chevy truck and drove 20 hours to West
Palm Beach from Xenia Ohio to buy a 1964 Amphicar. A
guy named Victor Brown lied to me after I made it
clear that the two Amphis I have do not float and I
wanted a swimming car now. He told me he had a good
running and swimming car. I drove down to find it was
rusted and could not swim. The engine sounded good but
it broke down a block from his place. I have asked him
to reimburse me for my expenses, but he has not
responded. Victor Brown is the guy that has the
floating camper and the King of Romania's Amphicar for
sale. Beware of this guy. I am giving him a few more
days then my lawyer and Ebay are going to get calls.

Thanks so much for this information. I was due to drive down to see the car
from Orlando when I was there on business 2-weeks ago. The hotel screwed my
rental car reservation up, so I could not make it. I was then considering
buying the car without seeing it and was waiting for him to e-mail me
photos. I will certainly steer clear of this guy now. He told me it was a
swimmer with very little rust!
