About 8 - 10 years ago, I used a resonator for a ( 70's? ) VW rabbit. It has a nice tone, is a small short oval with inlet/outlet at the ends (so needed to bend a pipe for the input, and set outlet to straight out ... lines up with the normal exhaust exit.) I welded a strap onto it to help support it via the engine brace. I don't know if a muffler shop might stock that any more or not. And it isn't a straight bolt up as you need to do a little custom work.

This is the California VW muffler, identical (or looks identical: round
cylinder w/ ports at each end) to the current Amphicar standard. I've used
them since 1994.

is there any substitute which will work reasonably well for an air cleaner?

Doesn't need to look exactly stock - just fit and use an off-the-shelf air cleaner.

The BugHaus muffler (1977 VW Calif fuel injected only) muffler still needs the tailpipe. Hugh has the tailpipe/chrome tip and they fit perfectly. Get your muffler from BugHaus and order the tailpipe and chrome tip from Hugh.

In looking around, these are available from a number of VW specialty shops.

One thing to keep in mind is that some are made in Germany/Italy, others come from Brazil.* In general, the brazilian parts tend to be of inferior quality.* Some of the sites do specify country of origin and some even offer both.

I asked because I have the chrome tailpipe, but it does not fit over the tailpipe on the car's current muffler, which was on the car when I purchased it.

What you will find is the SAME muffler Hugh sells for much more $. The P/N listing as I recall showed '77 only, I wouldn't have any idea what the difference is for other years.

Anyone know what way around the gas flow is in that muffler when it's fitted to the VW ? I think it might be the other way ? If so I wonder if it would cause problems. I had what looks like the same muffler fitted to one of my cars some years ago and found it was loud but also very hot where the gas came in from the manifold pipe. Would be good to cut one open and see how it's routed inside.

Amphicar really did a great job on the original muffler, it seems to tick all the boxes for being quiet, gas efficient but also doesn't get too hot. I've not seen any replacement that works better, maybe it's time to have some made to the original design ?

Your right David, the nipple on the side of the muffler body that connects to the header J pipe on the Amphi is the tailpipe on the Injected VW Bug. Am I wrong in assuming Hugh has investigated this and has found that the 1147 performs better and thus has dubbed this the 8-28-01HP KIT, "High Performance":032: muffler?

"Neat?"...Man, ain't that an understatement! If it's the same fellow
from Indiana whose tricked out disk braked, super-stainlessed and
LED-lit Amphi I saw in Celina a few years back, then I'd say his engine
bay looks like a friggin' Romulan pleasure craft. Just stunning. So
much so that there really should be a whole section on that Amphi and
maybe the one with the aft-mounted Bass boat perch, teak deck and
out-of-the-side Harley tailpipes titled "What if..." on the Club
website.

Yes, the exhaust does run the other way in the VW but it doesn't seem to matter. I've used these mufflers, under various brands, for years but they're not all the same. I used Hugh's old high performance muffler and found it too loud. I'm the one that first tried the Arvin Meritor brand and found that they sounded nice. Not as quiet as the original Amphicar muffler but I'm running them on 1296 engines and those are not as quiet an engine anyway. I told Hugh that I liked the sound of this muffler and didn't like his. He found a source for them and I think it's the one he's still selling.
