magnets

I've heard that the drain plugs on gearboxes and engines are often
magnetized. I know that both on Amphis are not. Does anyone know if those
plugs can be magnetized? That would be the hot set-up as I have found that
magnets are very brittle and attaching one with a machine screw to the
inside of a drain plug would be risky. Attaching one to the bottom of the
drain plug is not an easy task as dropping it on the greasy hull floor will
result in it staying there until the trans comes out.

It is true that I used far more magnets than I needed to to hold my license plates on. I just wasn't sure how strong the force of water would be on the plates and I didn't want the plates to move and scratch up the paint or come off in the water. I just used 50 magnets because that's what came in a bag and those plates will not budge. The teacher source site has more than one size, but the ones I got look to be the size of a quarter inch flat washer only maybe 4 times as thick. It looks like the price went up because now they are $29 for 50 magnets Oh well, that's still a lot cheaper than $50 a pair which is how much we at the OSU the physics dept paid back in the early 90s when they first came out. They are fun to play with and they pinch your fingers and can chip and become sharp at the edges.
