Lake Dora Swim-In

The big day this year, 2010, is Saturday March 27th. It is the same show on
the same Lake Dora, but is now relocated 6 miles west to Tavares. This may
help clarify to our out of state participants that only the location has
changed by 6 miles, but it is still on the same Lake Dora. Two bonuses of
the new location are that our de facto headquarters for all 13 years, the
"Inn on the Green," is actually closer being only about 2 miles away and the
Golden Corral where we hold our annual Banquet Extravaganza is only one mile
away. Hotel accommodations tend to fill up early, so if you are thinking
of coming, call soon. If you call the Inn on the Green, mention that you are
part of the Amphicar group. There are only a limited number of rooms
reserved for our Amphicar people. There is also a large RV campground 2 miles
away where space is not a problem.
Their e-mail address is _www.fishermanscoverv.us_
(http://www.fishermanscoverv.us)

The new location has more space and more and better parking for the public
for what has become a very well known and popular show. As was pointed out
in a recent e-mail, the event is hosted by the Sunnyland Chapter of the
Antique Boat Society. However, ever since Dave Monier contacted Peter Fredsall
and Dan Borgman in 1998, the three of them with their Amphicars took part
in what then became the First Annual Lake Dora Swim-In. By chance, Carol
and I went with our then recently acquired 1948 Ford Woodie Station Wagon at
the invitation of the Florida Woodie owners who had been taking advantage
of the Boat show for several years as a chance to get together and show off
these special vehicles. We arrived and what to our wondering eyes did we
see but the 3 Amphicars and life has not been the same since. I went crazy
taking pictures and also got my first Amphicar ride with Dave Monier. Our
Florida "Land of Sunshine" Swim-In has become the place to come to in order to
get away from the snow and northern chill and properly inaugurate the new
Amphicar season. The temperature is usually in the 70s or higher, but has
been in the 60s a couple of times. However, we have NEVER had a rainy day
on our big Saturday Swim-Ins and this year will be our 13th Annual Lake Dora
Swim-In. The only real adverse weather was last year when the wind was
unexpectedly blustery - as high as 30-40 mph - which curtailed much of the
boating. Even a pontoon float plane had trouble taking off to leave after it
arrived.

My wife, Carol, and I had just acquired our 1967 Amphicar which we named
the "Split Personality" in August 1997 prior to the Mount Dora Swim-In. We
had not gathered the courage to take it in the water after so many people
pointed down with their index finger whenever we mentioned our curious
acquisition. Carol would not even go with me for its initial baptism. However,
once we got her wet, there has been no stopping us and the "Split Personality"
hits the water frequently ( and I mean "hits" as old Capt.Splash loves to
give onlookers a show.) We also participated in the first 2 events at
Celina.

As you are aware, Peter Fredsall has now taken the reins as the Chairman of
our Lake Dora Swim-In. Also, as of last year, Registration for this show
is through the Antique Boat Club and Peter will either send you an
application or tell you how to bring it up on the internet if that possibility
becomes available. Registration for the event includes the sumptious Friday
evening Captain's Party hosted by the Antique Boat Club which always provides
lots of good food and comaraderie.

We look forward to seeing you there. March 27th of two thousand ten is
where you'll wish you'd been !

If Doc, will let me I plan to be in Mt Dora area begining of Feb. but may not be able to stay till end of March.
Ron and I are planning a all day swim in Ocala area ,Beginning of March.
we will go up the Silver River ,4 miles of cristal clear 70* spring water with a flow speed of 4 MPH, so its a swow cruise up but faster coming back. lots of downed trees to go around, fish, turtles, monkeys, gators,
the whole water trip will take about 4+ hrs
Chuck Chuck you still in on it?, how many others would like to do a swim like this?

Gord - it sounds good to me. As it stands, the only thing on the calendar
the first 2 weeks of march are Sumpter on the 7th ( where we met last
year.) Figure out the date and where we'd start and I'll do some figuring. I
would tow it to the Ocala area and then drive the Amphi if we joined you. We
hope you're doing better, since you didn't get top marks a bit ago on your
health. The new Float valve and using non-ethanol gas with some Stabil has
the "Split Personality" behaving nicely. Vic

Hi Gord, I would love to be there , but step daughter is getting married
that Saturday. Was hoping to come down the following week but co worker
already put in for that week. My hospital is being downsized April 1 and I may
be out of a job altogether. Cannot make any plans for a few more weeks until
I see if I get another job in the system or get permanently laid off. But,
you guys enjoy and think about me. I will be there in
thought. Thanks, Chuck Chuck with even worse bad luck

Count your blessings Gord. At least you are sleeping in your own bed. I still have at the least 2 more weeks laying flat on my back (can't raise my head more than 20 deg.) in this hospital bed. I'd love to just see the sky or go out with my girlfriend.

I made it to Florida, just in time for a cold snap here too,,
bought a new comp. and its took me this long to get up on line again.
I ca not stay long enough for the Dora lake meet
so Ron and I are planning a swim in on MARCH 6th
As i said earlyer it will be a long swim up the Siver River near Ocala on Route 40,Will give all morning to get there, and meet,.After lunch ,We will depart from the Park,(you can trailer and unload there or at a nearby Walmart) at 1 pm and should be back by 5 pm,
This is a long but exciting cruise and all Amphicars are welcome to join.
Even Greg from Pens, said he will bring his car all the way down, just to do it.
It is very imoprtant that car can stay water tight as there is NOWHERE
to come out of water, and there ARE Gaters!!!!!
