It is no joke! All forward gears result in backing up. Reverse selection
moves the car forward. I don't see the problem. 70 mph in reverse downhill
with a tail wind sounds like fun!!

Way back when I was in my teens I built a Dune Buggy using a 140HP
Corvair engine. Almost as much fun as an Amphicar but lots more power.
Most engines rotate CW when viewed from the "front" of the engine,
that is the crankshaft pulley end. Seems GM had another idea with
their rear mounted engine thus the Corvair engine rotates CW as viewed
from the front of the - vehicle. That created the 4-speeds in reverse
problem when mated to the VW transaxle. One way to fix that annoying
problem was to reverse the engine rotation with a reverse cam and
distributor gear. Fortunately, VW conveniently made their transaxles
with a symetrical differential housing. The elegantly simple solution
was to put the ring gear on the other side. That did make the entire
transmission run in reverse except for the axle but it didn't matter.
I ran it for years that way.

Now our Amphicar transaxles don't have a symetrical differential
housing but is it possible to still install the ring gear on the other
side of the pinion gear? Either that or it's an April Fools joke.

All the best,
