.....once again Insurance comes up in discussion.....

Many Amphicar owners use Hagerty Insurance. They know what an Amphicar
is...they let you drive the car without restrictions....and they cover you
in water. They even have an agent in charge of Amphicars!

I'd highly recommend them to anyone who's a bit unsure if their car is covered while a boat or for any reason they want to change. I've never placed a claim over the years (knock on wood), but if I ever need to I hope this is as easy.</font>

I have utilized Grundy for my other cars, and when I asked them to
bind the amphi they did so without a hitch. The only problem I have
is that I can't get in writing from them that they will cover it for
loss in the water. They explained that since the policy
doesn't 'exclude' water damage, it is therefore covered. Not a great
answer, but the only one I could get from them. Since I have many
cars covered by them, they are very inexpensive, but I'm not very
comfortable with the coverage. Please let me know what you find out.
Thanks, Rick

Rick,

Their "word" is only as good as the paper it's written on. They can
say "no coverage" and you have nothing. Unless you are confidant that
they will write you a check if you car sinks, I would look else
where. I personally don't trust Insurance companies at all.

I would seriously consider another company. Haggerty has many Amphis
insured and they add a specific writer for full coverage in the
water, agreed value and no mileage restrictions.

My Amphi is covered by State Farm through the agent
I've been with for 20 years. Their standard classic
car insurance covers me in the water. They had a good
laugh about it and had to inquire "up the line" within
State Farm management but, in the end, said I needed
no additional coverage for the water. Still concerned
about loopholes, I did get them to put it in writing.

My premium for a stated value of $40K through State Farm is $262.50 for 6
months There are no restrictions, and it is covered in the water. The
comprehensive can be dropped during the off season. I'm interested in
comments.

I recently insured my Amphicar through American Collectors Insurance.

I am NOT a lawyer, but I read the policy very carefully. From my reading I
came to the following conclusions:

1) I concluded that, as the company told me, my car would be covered if I
sank it.

2) I also concluded that my LIABILITY coverage would NOT cover me if I caused
a boating accident.

My policy says:

"We will pay damages for 'bodily injury' or 'property damage' for which any
'insured' becomes legally responsible because of an auto accident."

It's those last two words -- auto accident -- which I think are key. Do you
think I could convince the insurance company that I had an "auto accident" in
the middle of the lake?

I suspect that this is similar to other auto policies. And, I suspect
Hagerty's extra marine policy would cover this liability issue.

Personally I take more insurance risks than many people. I figure that at 5
mph in the water, I'm unlikely to cause an accident. So, I take the risk of
not having a marine policy. However, if you don't want to take this risk, I
recommend you read your policy carefully -- and get an additional marine
policy if your auto policy reads like mine.

Were, in Texas which can be a very annal state to have insurance in!

Our agent worked very hard to try and get our amphi covered, but higher ups
wouldn't budge. If they covered it as a car, it wouldn't be covered in the
water. And under their definitions, an amphibious type of vehichle couldn't
be covered anyway. Through Grundy, it's going to be about 200 yr for comp &
collision. We would have gone with Hagarty, but they wouldn't cover us
because of the age of our other vechicles. I'm sending off the premium today
so we can get the ball rolling on getting the car inspected and getting
plates!

Rob,
You're paying a lot more than I do for full State Farm coverage. I
pay about $200/year for $45,000 of stated coverage with limited (2000
mile) usage, in Southern California. It's a plan they have for
classic cars. I've had my agent check with the guys upstairs and it
IS covered for damage or loss while in the water.

I think an auto policy will cover these things.

If you get hit by that "Rogue teenager", then the "Collision" section should
cover it. Mine says:

"'Collision' means the upset of 'your covered auto' or a 'non-owned' auto or
their impact with another vehicle or object."

Note the key words "or object". Now, there are some restrictions on the
object -- for example missiles, falling objects, and animals are not covered
here. But, there is nothing that excludes boats or PWC's. If I get hit by
another boat, I should be covered.

A sinking due to a "mechanical failure" would be covered under the
"Comprehensive" section. The comprehensive section basically covers a loss
for any reason not excluded in this section. There is one exclusion in my
policy that caused me a little confusion in this regard. My policy says:

"We will not pay for:

2. Damage due and confined to:

c. Mechanical or electrical breakdown or failure"

This exclusion of "mechanical or electrical breakdown" looked serious. What
happens if the car sinks due to a seal failure? But, the policy says "damage
due AND CONFINED TO". If my car sinks due to a seal failure, the damage will
NOT be confined to the mechanical failure, thus I feel my car would still be
covered.

Note that I'm not basing this strictly on my own reading of the policy. I
read the policy to verify what the company told me. I specifically asked two
different representatives of the insurance company, at two times, if sinking
would be covered. They said it would. Also, In my application, where it
asked about how the car would be used, I specified that it was amphibious and
I would take it swimming.

In short, I'm comfortable that damage while on the water or sinking of my car
is covered by my policy. It's just my liability if I cause an accident on
the water that seems to be missing.

Seems very high to me. Mine isn't insured that high but I know I'm
under 180 even with the extra 40 for the marine coverage at
Haggerty. The incremental for the value isn't that big. For
collector cars the location isn't as big a factor as with your daily
driver.

I do have 3 cars with Haggerty with an aggregate of better than 80K.
Runs $380/year including the marine.

You interested in a bridge I own in New York? Great view of both the
city and Brooklyn.....

Roger,

I am not worried about causing an accident while in the water with my
43 HP terror machine. ;) I am more concerned about the "Rogue
teenager" that may cause the accident or simple mechanical failure
that may cause a problem. So I think the extra money for the marine
policy is money well spent. (BTW - I use Haggerty)

We should ask Billy about his experience with his insurance claim
from the rescue operation recently.

I made a mistake, my old coverage with State Farm was $400 annually with a
$40k stated value. Thanks to your comments, my premium through their classic
program is $130 per year. Thank you!

hello group. I'm in the process of buying an amphicar and would appreciate any
helpful hints about insuring it. Hagerty says they will insure it both on land
and sea. Has anyone dealt with them and are you satisfied with the coverage?

Dear Frank, Hello, I have 7 cars with Haggerty and have had 2 claims. I highly
recommend them not only on price but the claims were very easily handled with no

Fran,
I just completed the application process. They were very helpful being
familiar with the vehicle. It took a few weeks (in my case) before the
car was accepted but everything is all set now. They have a web site at
www.hagerty.com. Good luck.

We have been talking for a while about insurances. How about someone sharing
phone #s of the insurance companies that deal with Amphis? I'd especially like
the 800 # of Hagerty's.

Just began the strip down of my Amphi. This Wed. Billy Syx will attempt to
start the engine using a wine bottle. This I can't wait to see.
