Hi all, I just reassembled Snappy the white 64 after a total restoration.
Rebuilt motor with a "Gordon rebuilt" transmission and clutch and pressure
plate. The deal is the bilgen clutch CHATTERS, I mean as you start from a
stop. This car has all new motor and transmission mounts, but when you let
out the clutch in a normal fashion it wants to shake the whole car and
starting out up hill is much worse. This car did the same thing before the
rebuild. The clutch works perfect after you're moving, it is just as you
first start to move the car. I have about 1 inch of free clutch pedal
movement. I am not aware of any other adjustments. Any advice is welcome.
Both my other cars do the same thing, I thought they needed clutches, what do
I do? Please Tommy in Tampa

I am currently experiencing the exact same problem and was about to take the
plunge and pull the engine to replace the clutch. Maybe I should wait? I have
a new transmission and older clutch which still looked brand new when I decided
to reuse it during my re-build about 7 years ago. What gives?

Drawn out of the woodwork by the nasty clutch issue. I have been around
this block a few times
myself, and still have the SHUDDERING problem.

Read archive and come back.

We shall try to solve this difficult issue.

RE: Re: I need clutch help - PLEASE

Due to the occasional non-availability from Hugh, I have rebuilt/replaced
several clutches, both disks and pressure plates over the years. I did the
installations, but had a local rebuilder do the work. Quality has been fine.
Chatter is caused by uneven pressure. Usually it is a misadjusted pressure
plate providing an uneven load to the clutch plate (the three bolts holding the
forks take care of this, but you'll need a controllable compression mechanism
and proper measurement equipment -- a brake/clutch house should do this as part
of the rebuild. Cost has been less than $100.00 complete, both pressure plate
assembly & disc w/ new springs/friction material), but can also be a warped
flywheel. Also check that the fork return springs are is good shape.
Good Luck,

Hi-

I have major league chatter from stop in first. To get rid of it, I
basically pop the clutch, or at least move my foot off the clutch quickly.
The Amphis are geared so low in first that the car just moves forward
without hesitation. Obviously there is something wrong, but using the
clutch quickly might keep the chatter down until you get the problem fixed.

Re: Re: I need clutch help - PLEASE

Question on this subject. New Amphi's obviously did not have this problem.
Is this because Amphi was using new OEM parts which were produced to spec.
instead of rebuilt parts? Is it the rebuilding which causes the parts to
line up a bit different each time? With my car I'm working on I installed
an NOS pressure plate and clutch disk. I did have the flywheel serviced. I
haven't driven it yet and am now wondering if I can expect these problems.
Any Thoughts
Mike
