Although I haven't quite gotten down to this area yet, I have been studying how
the land transmission and differential are lubricated. I believe that the land
transmission oil also lubes the differential.
However, I always thought that the hypoid gear of the differential was under the
most load of any of your gears, and had to be lubricated by a high-pressure
resistant hypoid-rated oil. And, you were not supposed to use hypoid oil in a
manual transmission.
So, what's going on here? Is hypoid oil too thick for the land transmission, and
do we have to accept that the hypoid gear is getting less than optimum
lubrication?
