Hypoid Gear Oil

Although I haven't quite gotten down to this area yet, I have been studying how
the land transmission and differential are lubricated. I believe that the land
transmission oil also lubes the differential.

However, I always thought that the hypoid gear of the differential was under the
most load of any of your gears, and had to be lubricated by a high-pressure
resistant hypoid-rated oil. And, you were not supposed to use hypoid oil in a
manual transmission.

So, what's going on here? Is hypoid oil too thick for the land transmission, and
do we have to accept that the hypoid gear is getting less than optimum
lubrication?

Mr. Guppy,
You will find agreement among Amphicar owners on this question. Fill your
Transmission with AMSOIL that you order using the clubs customer number
508472. I think using that customer number pays for the clubs web page at NO
ADDITIONAL cost to you. Collectively we have hundreds of thousands of miles
on our Amsoil lubricated transmissions. You can check the want ads in our
newsletter to get easy order direction. Good luck and smooth shifting, Tommy
in Tampa

PS EVERYONE - We all order Amsoil products oil, filters, grease and gear oil.
Please don't forget to use that clubs customer number 508472. Amsoil kicks
back a small percentage that is used to pay for our wonderful clubs web site.
If you don't give them the number you pay the same amount and they keep it
all. So use that number and support the clubs web site.

===========

We've finally just returned from our post-Celina vacation in the
Adirondacks, so I should quickly clarify Tommy's well-meaning endorsements
about AMSOIL. Yes, their stuff is great. No doubt about that. Personally, I
won't use anything but AMSOIL lubricants in my own Amphi, and that's a
reason I originally became an AMSOIL dealer. But the AMSOIL sales
commissions do NOT pay for the Club's website at www.amphicar.com, its
domain registration, etc...Our annual Club membership dues cover that!

What the AMSOIL sales commissions DO pay for is the "Amphicar.net"
collection of owner websites at www.amphicar.net, where Amphicar owners can
basically "do their own thing" on the web free of charge and with none of
the pop-ups, banners and other snoodlets foisted on users of other free site
hosting services (i.e. GeoCities, Tripod, etc.). The AMSOIL sales
commissions also once contributed towards the cost of this Amphicar-Lovers
List when it still had a cost a few years back (and Amphicar.net still
secretly hosts a dormant "backup list" that can be called into play at a
moment's notice if ever our present freebie host YahooGroups were to
suddenly become too ponderous or unbearably "precious" with their
advertising or other requirements)

Of course, since the Club became member-run two years ago the lines between
Amphicar.net and Amphicar.com have certainly become a bit blurry, with many
collaborative features that seem like the Club's stuff actually being hosted
on Amphicar.net, especially items in the "Restoration" section...online
guides, manuals and so on. But still, make no mistake, the AMSOIL sales
commissions do not go directly toward's the Club or its website. They do
totally fund the Amphicar.net site with any left over usually going towards
financing my own synthetic lubricant fetish.
