speaking of VW parts.....does anyone know for sure if the window
cranks like the ones listed at www.800luvbugg.com will fit? Part
number 321-118 looks like it might. I know it isn't a perfect match,
but might it work as a replacement?

If you car is completely missing the horn assembly I can now help.
I make fibreglass horn bodies and now have a horn that fits it with a chrome
bezel. This will also work in original steel horns for those of you that
have a horn clamped under your hood! You can now put it where it belongs.
Took another yard picture yesterday of the 9 moving cars I have at my place
now, could not move the 4 others.
I know its not as much as the 50 cars , but I think it's a close 2ed.

I'am looking for a horn replacement any thoughts? I tryed Gordons and was
told the company they were getting horns from would not sell the horns to
them.
They (Gordons) said that it was a nikko brand.
I"ve tried motorcycle shops but have struck out. Any help would be
very nice to have.

Thanks Bubba Hauss

I have done a great bit of work on HORNS this year and have reproduced a
fibreglass copy of the horn body.
It is available a unit right out of the mould for you to finish off or I
have one of each colour painted and ready to ship.
I also sock a chrome replacement horn that fits right in to the glass body
or very easily into the original steel horn ass.
for the purest you could reuse your old chrome cover but this cover is so
close you really have to look to tell.
I can email my price list to anyone who wants it
just email me off line.

Interior kits and fibreglass panels my specialty!

By the way
I just brought the Mr Acroyde car into the shop for the 1st time.
it is much better than I thought it was.
The underneath is really good, I put a new master cylinder on it
and am going to install the fibreglass lower fenders this week.
I will be taking it to Toronto on Dec. 6 to a car flea market/sales show for
$25,000Canadian
the price will still be the same as in club classified at $17500.00 US,
starts good after a long sit and drives and floats
till then.

As I've stated many times on this list and referenced from my website, I've
used a JC Whitney horn (for < $10) and fit it into the stock horn shell
with the stock chrome front. Other than actually being a relatively loud
horn, its hard to tell any difference without really sticking your eyeballs
up real close. (or else by taking it apart).

The original horn on my car didn't work. I tried all I knew to make
it work and always nothing! So I decided to take it to a local guy
who could maybe re-wind the coils. He put 12V to test it (not
rewound) and BEEEEEEEEEEEP! It worked fine and still does to this
day. HUMM?

Is there someone out there that rebuilds horns an an exchange basis?
Or are parts with simple instructions available?

I read online, or in a newsletter a few years back, that a Honda
motorcycle horn fits perfectly in an Amphi mount. Never having heard
an Amphi horn before I just know the difference. I kinda like the
sound of a Frieghtliner or a diesel locomotive. That's not what I'd
expect from a Honda. Well, probably not from an Amphi either.

Any thoughts?

Glenn.: I found a horn at a VW shop with the bolt pattern that matched the original. I had to drill out the holes and tap a couple and sandwiched it between the chrome grille and horn shell. All for about $7 and beeps like a german car! Marc, Amphigr66n.

Sounds like a much better option than a Honda motorcycle horn.

Thanks,

I've searched high and low and can not find a horn with the VWbolt pattern. I looked at my '78 Mercedes and it'd similar but doesn't have the bolt pattern. I saw some Jap scooters that looked similiar. I'm guessing this horn vanished in the 60's with the Amphi.

My Messerschmitt uses the same horn, only painted black instead of
chromed. Perhaps the Isetta uses it as well?

In the UK the horn is part of our annual safety test and so has to work reliably. The original and replacements talked about don't last long if you use steep slipways and they get dunked. In the end I fixed the problem for good with airhorns under the bonnet in the space behind the brake fluid container. The original Amphicar horn remains but is not connected. Of course airhorns are very 1960s - especially in "sportscars" so suit the character of the car well.

I'll try that. I think there's still one place left in our Metro area that specializes in bugs.

David -
Are your Air Horns single tone or "musical ?" If single tone, does itremind one of an ocean liner - in keeping with the mammoth size of an Amphicar ? Otherwise,is itlike an Italian multiple tone which would also be very 60ish as well as later and would likewise, in my opinion, be very appropriate to our unique craft ? Capt.
