Hey David,
Can you provide a little more detail on the heat shield that you mentioned
in your message below?
I've never seen one and wondered how difficult it would be to locate, or
make one.

Sounds like fuel vaporisation, first check the 5mm thick heat insulating
gaskets are between carb and manifold and fuel pump and block, then insolate
the fuel pipe, could also put a heat shield between manifold and carbs as
fitted to later cars, even try a different type of Gasoline.
