i had hoped that hard shift into 4th would be cured by installation of new motor and tranny mounts, but i still have difficulty shifting into 4th gear. what are some other items to look at that may be causing this?

Each gear has its own syncro, Was trany rebuilt?are there new syncros in it?
4th should be the easiest gear to go in.
all bolts at front shifter tight?

no rebuild--just took front cover off to install new seal (and also added a J. Friese clutch).
Inside looked real clean, no signs of water.

That sure sounds like a worn synchro for that forth gear. Big tranny tear down to replace it and I'd replace all 4 while you're at it.

is this what i'd need:
SYNCRO RING [2-16-19]
and once i'm in there, do these too?
needle bearing set [2-16-14]

hard shift is not enough information. Hard as does it not engage. Or engages with more effort. Or does it grind. Does it grind everytime?. Look closely at shift rod. Very possibly it is making contact with transmission. Also alignment of pivot ball is more critical with some transmissions. Makes sure the pivot ball is not binding. Too loose or too tight can cause issues. I would fiddle with adjustments before pulling trans..
