Happy Birthday Amphi!
Amphi did the math as sort of a hint to
see if I'd remembered. 1964 to 2004 is
40 years. Aging gracefully, still able
to swim and running great, a picture of
health despite the minor carcinomas in
the hind quarters. Forty years is a long
time for any car, but for an Amphi that
endures exposure to more liquid elements
than any other vehicle, it's a testament
to Amphi's creator and the loving care
we've put forward to preserve the species.
I not only remembered Amphi's birthday?
I threw a surprise party for him. Amphi's
birthday cake, (a German Chocolate cake?
naturally) was ignited and presented in
the greatest of tradition. Forty candles
blazing while the band played "Take Me to
the River," by the Talking Heads. Party
hats and propellers beanies, costumed
mermaids and mermen. Four decades worth
of aqueous youthfulness and amphibious
joy were being honored, remembered, and
celebrated. Amphi blew out all the candles
in one mighty breath and we started the
festivities in earnest. Cameras flashed
as the water balloon relay race morphed
into a terrific wet T-shirt contest.
And the bobbing for bilge plugs game became
a hysterical mess as several contestants
fell overboard. The band played well past
10:00 PM. Sadly, the bilge squirting
contest was interrupted by the local police,
(responding to a noise complaint? allegedly).
Apparently one of the officers accidentally
crossed into my 25 foot stream of bilge spray?
the party was broken up shortly thereafter.
Anyway, Amphi is now 40. Happy Birthday Amphi?
We'll do it again in five or ten years? or
whenever my parole is approved.
