Hand Throttle Linkage

My obsessive compulsive disorder, which has once again manifested
itself into my amphicar, drove me to fix the hand throttle cable
which has not worked for some time.

I remove seats, mats, floors, kick panels, everything to get to the
darned accelerator linkage. The throttle handle and cable all seem to
be in working order, but the opposite end of the cable is not hooked
to anything.

I refer to my maintenance manual, but the reference to the cable
system is lame if that. It says the cable hooks to the "pedal" but
then refers to "clamping nipple accessible from from trunk". Which is
it, and where is it?

I dont have a clamp on the end of the cable wire (obviously allowing
wire to become inoperable) but I cannot for the life of me figure out
where to put thise wire neverless a replacement nipple clamp.

There is one spot at the base of the accelerator lever (the lever
where the actual gas pedal rod connects). The cable does not go that
far down however, and the hole seems a bit large for such a small
cable/clamp.

A picture would be great, but probably somewhat ackward to obtain,
so a detailed explaination will help me out a whole bunch!

I have placed a pic (Cable_Position.jpg) in the files section of
where the small clamp goes (red arrow) and the placement of the cable.

It should go thru the clamp located on the opposite side of the panrl
from the pic. Notice the 2 bolts above the throttle pedal? Those hold
the clamp. I drew in the cable for clarity.

Thank you so much for the picture. I am taking a print to my garage
and see if I can get that bad boy hooked up.

The picture brings up another question. I see a "pedal" in the
picture. This pedal is in the trunk is it not? (perhaps I am lost)
What exactly is this pedal for in the trunk? The reason I ask is I
found a pedal "pad" laying in the bottom of my trunk. I am not
missing any pedals inside the cabin so I did not know what it was
for. It looks alot like the one in that picture.

What is it?

Now that I am at the garage I can better understand the picture.
I see exactly where that wire goes. And I see that this is not
in the trunk but behind the pedal wall.


This should fix it up. As far as that mystery pedal, it must be an
extra. LOL

Thanks again.. Off to the part store to get a big enough clamp to
fill that hole.

UPDATE:

My throttle cable gets wrapped up in the linkage when I try to
connect to the hole where the one in the picture hooks to. The reason
is my cable is clamped more to the driver side than yours, thus it
does not reach properly.

However, in the process of doing this, I found the old clamp in the
front most bilge area. It still had some wire in it. So with that
little piece of wire added to the cable, it would reach the lowest
portion of the lever where an identicle hole exisits on the proper
side of the pedal, and it seems to be more in line with the
actual "throw" of the lever.

My problem now is to find a coupler to add some length to this wire
so I dont have to rerun a whole new cable. Should be a common parts
store stock item.

Thanks again for the picture, it really helped me get a feel for the
workings of the linkage.

With technology and helpful friends, who needs a mechanic?!

Chris,

You can make a clamp (for the end of the cable) by drillling a hole
in a small bolt as near the head as possible. Sandwich the cable
between 2 flat washers and add a nut. The cable must not be attached
to the pedal. The throttle pedal needs to move independantly of the
cable. If you cable isn't long enough, have you tried rerouting it?
(yea, I know, dumb question) Seems that there should be oodles
(Technical term) of extra cable.

The clamp that holds the cable to the panel is a flat piece of metal
with a small round bit that covers the actual cable housing. The 2
bolts hold the housing against the panel.

Thanks for the tip! I actually went to the parts store and got a
pair of wirestops. One for the clamp, and one to join the extra
length of wire with. Seems to work good. Little stiff when I try to
push the handle back in, and almost have to give the peddle a "pull"
with my foot to return it to idle, but for water purposes this is
acceptable for me. Peddle works normal when not using handle.
