I heard that someone was arrested and even hand-cuffed when he made the
wrong comment to an officer that was not too happy with an Amphi. Is this
true? Please tell me the story.

I have an experience, though not involving hand-cuffs or an arrest,
that has to do with my Amphi. Let me say first that every police
officer or park ranger I have ever met in my Amphicar has been great,
just like any other amazed passer-by, with the execption of one.

One of my favorite State Parks here in North East Ohio is Portage
Lakes. They have a nice launch at a place called Turkeyfoot Lake. I
trailered my car to the park and drove up the entrance road. BUT
unlike every other boater/trailer in the park, I was NOT heading for
the ramps with my truck/trailer/boat/car. I wanted the parking lot so
I could unload Amphi and be on my way.

If you could picture the set-up at this park, the only way to get to
the parking lot is to either go to the ramps, pass waiting
trucks/boats, cross the launching area (where trucks/boats are
busying launching and/or loading) and proceed to the lot, OR, you can
go into the lot through the Exit, which is right there next to me,
and it is not even a roadway, more like a break in the asphalt curb
where the boundry between parking lot and road is defined.

So I enter through the exit with my load, no one is even around, not
that it really would have effected anything because as I say, it did
not appear to a big deal. Boy was I wrong. A park ranger just
happened to see what I had done, and waited for me to unload, gather
my guests and proceed to the launch ramp in front of the typical
cheering crowd before he stops me, and reads me the riot act in front
of everyone, even threatening to ban me from my favorite lake!

I kept my cool with a calm "Yes sir, No sir, Sorry sir". I did not
end up with a ticket, and in fact I believe the crowd felt the same
as I did, that this ranger clearly had way too much time on his
hands, and too much gung-ho under his belt.

Funny, I am reminded of this event everytime I visit any standard
marina launch facility. Even if I am not trailered and am driving
Amphi on her own, I must think for a second on the proper way to
handle my "unique abilities" as not to offend anyone. Do I wait in
line with the rest of the suckers, do I approach the ramps from the
opposite direction than the standard? (as often required for correct
approach) I wont even begin to detail my thoughts on how to get out
of the water at some of these places without fits of social strain!

Sometimes I think the good ole fashioned rough shore launch is what
Hans had in mind for us amphibians. Its sure is less stressful!

Well, Billy didn't get arrested or hand cuffed when he
got stuck in the Delaware, but the Police were looking
for him to do something wrong so they could. The
State Trooper that was there actually told me he was
"LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO CHARGE HIM WITH".

Finally, Bill received a ticket from said trooper for
"careless operation of a vessel". It just so happened
that this is one of those offenses where the
punishment would be decided in court by the Judge. I
told him to take with him the new paper articles about
Otterbein and the letters he has recevied from some
people he has given rides to. However, our legal
service told him not to, that it would anger the
Judge.

The Judge and spoken to the trooper who issued the
ticket. Billy was unable to talk to the Prosecutor;
Judges orders! He really wanted to stick him! The
Judge wanted to know why he was out in the water "with
two girls" (young, but adult). Billy told him that he
loves to give people rides and told him about
Otterbein. The response from the open minded Judge
was "Yeah right, you give rides out of the goodness of
your heart". He just wouldn't believe that Billy
would do such a thing. He wound up paying something
like $50 for EVERY emergency company that came out for
the rescue operation. There were a bunch there.

Don't know if any of you are familiar with emergency
responders, but these guys hear something strange is
going on and, POOF, they are THERE! They just love
something different to go out to. I can just see them
after hearing there was a car stuck on the rocks in
the river.

Just the other day I saw a friend who just happens to
be a Judge. I told her what happened and what the
legal service told us. She was amazed that the Judge
was so unbelieving and equally amazed that the legal
service told him not to take any of the "stuff". She
told me that the "stuff" would not have angered the
Judge.

What a PITA!

If you are referring to Lake Geneva, yes, someone (an interested
bystander) was arrested and hand cuffed last year when he got upset
and told the cop off after the cop told us to get our cars off his
beach. It was fun while it lasted, 3 years!
