Gear Mesh Noise Reduction

My transmission is loud as heck, almost to a point of being
uncomfortable with the top up. It tends to be when the transmission
is working, OR, when I am coasting while in gear while going fast. It
is not a destructive grind or nothing, just noisey.

Do other Amphi trans sound this way? Can I expect it to clear up
with mileage? (reconditioned tranny from gordon with less than 200
miles on it in my car). Has anyone come up with a noise reduction
solution short of heavy cabin insultation?

This will probably sound dumb, but have you checked the fluid lately.
A transmission low on fluid will make a lot of noise. Mine was making
noise & since I already had the seats removed, doing other things, I
decided to change out the fluid in both transmissions except that the
land transmission was very low. I drained what was left, by siphon,
filled them both up to the overflow bolt, started in up & listened to
the silence. Ray

Good suggestion! However the fluids are all full. In fact, (I will
spare the gorey details) I have had my tranny fluids changed/filled
more times than I care to recall without medication.

Are you using Amsoil 80W-90 Gear Lube?
It really reduces tranny noise.

I was told not to use Amsoil until 1000 mile break-in.
Still think I should try it?

=============

As with engine rebuilds, with rebuilt land and water transmissions one might
do well to use a standard lubricant during the 500-1000 mile breaking in
period, and thereafter do a full drain of both trannies (pull the drain
plugs) and THEN begin using the GL-4 grade AMSOIL Gear Lube. With that
said, based on your earlier posting to this List about excessive tranny
noise, I would first urge you to have someone else with previous hands on
experience rebuilding or at least remounting Amphicar trannies swing on by
for a look see. It's easy to get this or that misaligned or something else
may not be entirely jake. Then again, Amphicar trannies ARE a wee bit loud
and wailing at their best, so maybe it's nothing at all. Still, it might be
best to get that second opinion if you can.

There's lots more on the topic of post-rebuild lubricants and draining in
the List Archives (see especially
http://www.escribe.com/automotive/amphicar/search.html?query=breaking+amsoil
), but basically it boils down to this: After a rebuild one WANTS that
extra wear that standard lubricants can't avoid...up to a point--just until
everything settles in and loosens up and flushes out. That first
post-rebuild drain, at about 500-1000 miles, will flush out all sorts of
microscopic crud, shards, machining residues, etc. THEN you use the
AMSOIL...

Thanks Bilgemeister, I will be at Mt. Dora so I am sure someone
will offer me look see.

Having suffered through 3 years of mystery transmission problems I
would advise you to have a amphicar expert look at it closely. I
know that eith Billy or Dave the Wave are good at this. Dave did
wonders with mine and saved me a ton of money over buying a rebuilt
transmission (or installing my spare).

Now my transmission is fairly quiet but it is hard to tell over the
Amphicar noise. Dave Chapman road in the back seat at Celina and
gave it a "proffesional" listen and said it was okay.

Good Luck.

Eric
