Gas shutoff valve(s)

My car doesn't currently have any shutoff valve for the gas. I assume that
the early cars had the manual valve, and the later ones had the "magneto shut
off valve". Is this correct, or were both valves used on the same car?

This is how I've heard it explained: Later models had both the manual
shut-off valve and the magneto valve as stock equipment from the ealerships,
but the manual valve's famous propensity to leak if you even look at it
sideways, means that many have since been replaced with other types of taps
and (usually inline) filter arrangements by the subsequent owners. The
magnetic shutoff valve was a later addition, often a retrofitted item even
to earlier cars. It is intended to inhibit the possibility of fuel
"siphoning" down the fuel lines from the gas tank and pouring out the carb
when the vehicle was parked, especially if on an incline when the fuel level
in the tank is higher than the carb.

Hello Bilgey,

Remember, I tracked down the gasket that leaks in the manual valve
(the only one that Hugh doesn't sell) and have some in stock for
whoever needs to repair that item.

What does it look like?... I'm not sure if I have one or not. I do have the
manual
valve and it works fine.

Craig,

The fuel tap is mounted to the fitting below your tank and it will
have a "L" shaped handle that extends inside below the dash just
above and to the right of the accelerator pedal. It's Reserve/on/off.

The magneto shutof valve (12V electrically operated) is located
usually just after the fuel tap with a wire to your master cylinder
brake light switch and one to ground. Both are aluminum colored. This
one cuts the fuel when the key is off.

out of the fuel tap shut off valve. I'll have to chech and see if it is up
stream
between the tap valve and tank.

Your tap is screwed directly to a left handed thread in the bottom of
your tank, so up stream *is* your tank! There is a pic of John
Friese's steering brace (files section) that shows the magneto valve
in the lower left corner where the bottom of his brace is bolted to.

After looking at that pic I know now my Amphi does not have a magneto shut off
valve.
It must have been removed in the past. Sounds like something I should replace...
