With the help of the little woman today, the engine and tranny got
yanked from Das Boot. took the tranny off, and sure enough, the pressure
plate failed. One of those little arms snapped right off. Kinda a pisser
after 300 miles. Went down to the local MG/Triumph place, and bought
another pressure plate. They sell brand new ones! I think the one I got
from Gordon's was a rebuild, so we will see if this makes a difference.
I did get a new carbon bearing today, so if the ball bearing one was in
any way responsible, at least that will be resolved.

Oh, and just my two cents worth on the quality of the parts from
Gordons...I am really pretty satisfied for the most part...but when I
ordered up a replacement leather strap for my deck lid light, I received
a 1/4 strap that looks for all the world like a cat collar. NOT a
replacement Amphicar part! ;^)

The leather strap for the deck lid light? Does my Amphi have one of them?

Mine has two leather straps screwed into the brace for the seat back.
One was removed when the car was dissasembled, and remains in great
shap. The other was left on the car and rotted. to be replaced by the
kitty collar. Apparently they were Amphi standard issue.

Ed,
There should be two leather straps on the rear seat back brace. There
are also two rubber pads placed so that when the flag pole is in
storage the head won't bang against the seat brace, making noise and
marring it's finish.

You're right about that strap that Hugh has in stock. It's half the
width of the original and does look like a cat collar. It's not one
of his finest efforts in replacement parts. After checking it out
down at Hugh's, I had a local leather shop make a pair up from a
couple of small (5/8") buckles and leather scraps.

Well, that explains it. Since my Amphi came equipped with a rear seat back with
the strength of a wet graham cracker, and about 6" of leaves / rust / oily
sawdust in the bilge, I must have vacuumed it up; just another unknown thump as
it went through the hose.
