Did a search on Ebay and came up with a few options.

I searched for Porsche 356 fuel petcock and came up with these among others. Wondering what the Amphicar experts think about these possibly fitting the Amphicar tank. Searching for Porsche Fuel tap pulls up some others as well.

My tank has a threaded pup welded into the bottom of it that I think is a 13.5 mm x 1mm pitch reverse thread but it's been a few years sense I checked it. I have a nut similar to the ones on these taps that is revers thread on one side and standard on the other to allow the tap to be tightened against the tank pup.

Amphicar fuel tank outlet nipple has a M16x1.0 RH thread. Same size but LH thread on the fuel tap. A dual threaded RH/LH nut pulls the fuel tap tight to the tank nipple. Use sealing washer 8-27-02b. G.I. sells them.

For the early fuel taps with the off/on/off function (single fuel inlet pipe, no reserve), I have the 24x2.5mm thick cork-neoprene selector seal gasket as well as the 24x19 fiber-neoprene gasket that fits under the retaining spring ring. Neither of these gaskets are in the parts breakdown of the fuel tap but are required to rebuild a stuck or leaky fuel selector valve assembly. Contact me if you'd like these two gaskets, $20, includes shipping in the U.S., instructions included.

Fuel selector taps with the off/on/reserve function uses a similar but much thicker gasket (22x4mm) that won't fit on the early selector valves. I think John Friese has them.

The 8-27-02c connecting nut is a M16x1.0 L/R threaded DIN 73376. Don't know if G.I. has them as their site shows this p/n as the filter.

Here's a site that shows the nut with the correct description:

http://www.kreidleroriginal.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=73376&x=0&y=0

And here's a site that shows an entire fuel tap assembly with the DIN 73376 connecting nut, so it appears like it should fit the Amphicar. However, it would need a modification to the rotating selector part, or a coupling of some sort, in order to accept the Amphicar selector lever.

Thanks Ken. I was just looking at the last link you posted to the tap. It looks like they won't ship to the U.S. I will have to contact them and see if there is another option.

I just received a new fuel valve that is a petcock for a PUCH moped from a place in San Francisco called Treatland. It has ON- OFF- RES , and that special 16mm nut with LH and RH threads so it can be used on an original Amphi fuel valve, It doesn't have a filter but has a screen over the pickup tubes in the tank and an in-line filter can be added after the valve. only $18 to my doorstep.

I'd like to order that. What kind of handle does it have? I assume it doesn't work with the factory lever?

Nice find.

Treatland often runs 20% with free shipping sales as well (I have a couple of old mopeds at home). They actually have quite a variety, some with filter screens. Not sure which one you used?

Make sure to update your fuel line while you are at it. Only use the latest fuel hose, which will be rated SAE 30R9, This is a lined hose (Lined with a Teflon like material) and is the stuff made to resist today's oxygenated gasolines. The old 30R7 hose USED to be acceptable, but no longer is, it will rot out from many of today's nasty fuels.

Many vendors still sell what they call the "correct German, metric hose", BUT it is often the inferior type, despite being OEM style factory hose. If it does not have the teflon like inner liner that 30R9 has, it is no good. Don't risk a leak or a fire. The old braided stuff was designed for another era of fuel.

You can buy 30R9 hose at many parts stores, make sure 30R9 is printed on the hose. It is difficult to find metric 30R9, I use 5/16 inch and 3/8 inch diameter 30R9 with the correct fuel-injection type hose clamps and find that it holds fine, nice and tight.

^ What Mike says, and if your hose is over 10 years old it should be changed as the nasties in modern fuels can cause it to fail, that is the most likely cause of fire in an Amphicar.
Last time I looked that "correct German metric hose" was pretty old, not correctly stamped, and didn't have the important Teflon liner.
Those motorcycle taps work fine just look a bit wrong ! If you want to repair the original (which is Porsche 356) then the parts can be ordered from Stoddard in Ohio. There are 3 different versions of the tap used on Amphcar but this is what we recently ordered from them to fix one of our late cars.

I restored my original valve with a cork internal seal from John Friese and it works like new. I like carrying spares so I now have this Moped valve. It has a small lever with no provision to use the Amphi control rod without modification but that's ok.
