I failed to mention that after I was towed back to our ramp, I tried to start the engine and it did have spark. Engine would start if I held my hand over the spark arrestor, like choking off the engine. Coil was very hot. Coil was new before Celina. Remember I am electronic ignition. I am a former ASE certified mechanic so I now the ins and out of an automobile. This is why I wondered what a fuel pump sounds like when it goes to hell.

On advise of John(I told you so) Bevins I pulled the engine and removed the pan. The fuel pump arm was in the pan as was the spring. It punched right through the strainer in the pan ripping the screen and bending it up and out of its mounting clips. The pump arm was bent on a 45 degree angle so it really got stuck somewhere. There are also two circular pieces of cast iron that looks like the bottom of the cylinder. These pieces are about a half an inch long. The big counter weights on the crank have marks on them from the arm flying around. Luckily the engine shut off when it lost the fuel pump otherwise it could have machine gunned the whole shebang. Will know more tomorrow when I get it on the engine stand.

Tim,

That really sucks, I wish you well and I hope the 2 circularpieces are casting that is irrelevant to block damage that would make the motor unusable...

Tim,

Be sure to inspect the lower end and any oil passages for debris or to
see if anything has been compromised. I'll bet you'll be OK. I am glad
you went ahead and pulled it rather than taking a chance on your
relatively new engine. I got my fingers crossed for you!

I hit a rock and dented my oilpan a couple months ago. Now I have to
pull it to fix the dent. The good thing is I have had a hotrod 1500
engine (built to run @ 5k all day) just waiting to go in in front of
an NOS trans I have had for several years. Maybe I will find time this
winter to do the change. I doubt I will be able to, but it's a thought.

John Bevins
