Front Wheel: Seal Install Problem

Ordered front wheel bearing and seals from EB Atmus.
Timken Bearings and (abbreviated) Harwl seals. Good prices

The RF hub came off without a puller which did not seam right. It
basically fell off! Do I have another problem?

I removed the races and put in the new ones on the RF with no
problem.


PROBLEM: Before I removed the old seal I could see that it was
damaged. The rubber was uneven on one side (looked bound
up) and someone had put silicon all around where the seal
seats. The problem I am having is installing the new seal. I
ruined one trying to install it. It wouldn't go in all the way. I used
a block of wood & hammer to tap evenly but it bound up. I took
out the one I ruined and rechecked the casting the seals fits into
and it seems fine.

I just checked the Amphicar Technical page and it has two seal
numbers listed. I bought the one's with the last 2 numbers
being "10" and mine has a "B" at the end. The page also shows
"08". Would the one's with the "8" be smaller? Maybe mine are
to large?

I not sure what to do at this point. I slightly put another new seal
on that I was going to use on the other side but want to make
sure it will fit before I force it and possibly ruin it too! Any
suggestions?

2ea 30206 tapered roller bearing (inner)

2ea 30204 tapered roller bearing (outer)

2ea 68x85x10B Metric Seal

ID = 68mm
OD = 85mm
Height = 8mm

This is the size of seal to ask for rather than a P/N. Call your
local bearing or decent auto parts store and ask for those
dimentions. They can look it up from there. If your hub has a groove
worn in it from the seal, you can order and thicker seal by changing
the last number to 10mm. (looks like you did that already!) This
will essentially move the seal contact surface to new area and
providing a new good seal.

Feel inside the lip where the seal sits. Sometimes there will be a
small area rolled over. I mean VERY small. Run some 120 or smaller
grit sandpaper along the inside, top edge to knock down the edge.
Inspect for and deformations like bent in or gouges in the surface.
Clean it up and try again. (order an extra) The "cup" should be as
straight as possible. If you can find a piece of pipe large enough
for a driver, it works better.

With new bearings, the front hubs will come off easilly after the
axel nut is removed.
