Hi all,
OK Ray and Captain John.
How do I get these bilgin bearings off the spindle? Those babies are on there
and don't want to let go. What tricks have been found (short of proper
maintenance) to get the front bearings off the spindles. Am I gonna have to cut
them
off with a dremal?
Any help will be put to use for sure.

Yep, the inner bearing race often is pretty stuck and you can't get a puller
behind. I've always managed to get them off by using 2 large pry bars as
levers at 180 degrees to each other, bang them both at the same time, you
need a helper to hold both bars whilst you hit them with hammers, if you get
it right they just pop forward and off.

You could use a Dremel but it's very difficult to get the right angle
without damaging something.

It's sometimes easier to remove the brake backing plates

The bearing in the hub can also be a pain to get out, you need to drill 2
small holes or make a grrove in the housing so you can get to the rear face
to push it out - difficult to explain but you'll see what I mean once it's
apart.

Be fussy about the quality of the replacement bearings, fit the best you can
find and use Amsoil.

Good day all,
Thanks for the short pry bar tip Ray.
And thanks for the numbers for the bearings.
Do I need the number for the grease seal too?
Thanks, Tommy in Tampa

Tommy, To get the inner bearing off, I use a carpenter short pry bar.
It sort of looks like a long spatula. Hint: Wipe off the greae
first. The last time I pryed one off it rolled up my pant leg. All
the way up. Chris ask me how the h#$& did I get grease up there. The
races come out really easy since I did a little mill work inside the
hub.

Re: Re: Front wheel bearing removal?

I know some folks prefer to re-work the hub to be able to get the races
out, but this trick also works quite well without drilling holes, etc...(
The hub is not modified in anyway...). Take your wire feed welder and run
a bead around the center of the race surface. As the weld cools and
contracts, the race shrinks and will pretty much fall out on its own when
you turn the hub over. At the least, the bead you welded onto the race
gives you a nice edge to tap against and even then, one or two light taps
at the most will get the race out of the hub. For the inner wheel
bearing, I end up grinding a notch in the remaining race on the axle. Then
a couple of whacks with a chisel splits it enough to come off. You don't
need to grind anywhere near all the way through and risk nicking the
axle....

As for seals, a while back (almost a year ago ... May 30, 2002 in archive
message M7019) I posted some part numbers for Chicago Rawhide (a usual NAPA
supplier....) By the way, Dave C., did you ever investigate those sleeves
as a possible repair for grooves in the drive axles?

There might be other places to get a seal, but I get mine from Hugh
Gordon. Ray
