The point You are missing is the pin behind the frame. A piece of welded
on sheet metal tab is bent over to stop pin from sliding out. Use a

I recently replaced my clutch cable and was able to unscrew the actual cable from the forked piece you are trying to remove. I also have a guy who makes up stainless steel cables with a teflon coated shield and waterproof ends. Works great

Thanks, that's the missing link Dave. I was thinking
either I had some unique car or everyone else is
smarter than me because, with the fork / pin assembly
a centimeter away from the frame rail, there is no
clearance for the pin to come out to remove the fork.
I feel a flat piece of sheet metal near the triangle
but couldn't tell what it did. The sheet metal is up
against the triangle to hold in place so the triangle
rides on some stationary pin attached to the frame?
Bend the sheet metal and it will slide off?

Mine's the original cable that can't be unscrewed. I
have the new Gordon one so after this I'll be able to
unscrew it like you suggest.
